After a find on a local ad site for a sorry looking bmx that good friend Nickfish said he would collect for me, the long journey began. Apologies, this thread is pic heavy...

This is what I bought...

Rough and beat up but I fell in love with those twin top tubes...

So began the restoration project and tear down.
The pipe the previous owner used as a seat post... dayyyyum that thing was tough to remove.

Etc...

I shared the build with close boomer buddies who have spurred me on in the bestest of ways to get this as beautiful as it is now. In no particular order thank you SLO, Chris (Lasonic TRC-920), Hisrudeness, T-Ster, Nickfish, geoffhartwell, Sanyovar, Northerner, and Hurb.
Fast forward to today...

If your reading this thread just scroll back to that first picture. The conversation went something along the lines of:

"I've seen this bike on blah blah for x amount can you collect it for me, heres a pic"

Nickfish obliges with a pick up and we all think Daves mad. Gulp. Well, umm, its a BMX Jim but not as we know it. I must admit i saw the pic via whatsapp group and thought it looked rough. Then there was a comedy (sorry Dave) section with Dave trying to remove a 19mm seat post from a 18mm hole and i thought, that thing is fecked.

The next few months my work days were brightened up with glimpses of parts back from chromers, Dave agonising over colours, rims, tyre styles, period correct model correct decals etc and although i wasn't restoring a BMX i felt like i was right there, it was awesome.

So much effort and attention to detail went into this and Dave's made a casual "i bought a rough bike and sorted it out" post but i have been enjoying all the way through and im astounded. Cracking job.

Look at the first and last pic again, faark!

Outstanding resto Dave! Thanks for giving me the play by play on this sweet BMX build. I really enjoyed watching this bike come to life with all the updates and pictures via WhatsApp :-) The end result is amazing bro! I just love these old school bikes, especially when they are brought back to their glory like this. Looks sweet with the JVC nex to it!

The transformation of a wreck into a minter has more than some magic in it. This bike is a time machine, just like any boombox you've restored so far. It sends me back in time and awakens dormant memories. A very good friend of mine had a model with the twin top tubes... I'm talking about yesterday, say 1977 or so. I used to borrow it to reach my girlfriend who lived in another village. And then... :-)

This thread deserves more attention than it has received so far. I have been distracted from the Boombox and the City exhibition, which ended up Saturday with a wonderful concert, so I haven't read the latest post with the due attention. What we have here, precisely? A battered bike that still had some sparkle of life in it. Doesn't it stir any memory? Say, the once full working ghettoblaster we happened to find in a thrift shop, at the fleamarket or in the dustbin?

The BMX was in need ot LTC, and she got it from one of the most dedicated boombox restorer I have come across ever since I started collecting. The patience, the attention, the expertise that docs put in this project have nothing to envy to the best threads I have read on this site -- and I have read many -- concerning the miracle of saving a boombox from the land of the dead.

Boomboxes and bikes go along well, as the above pictures show. They've so much in common, from chrome to style, to say the least. They're both time machines, as the picture with the M70 shows: it could have been taken some 35 years ago, and yet it's a document of the year 2018. Or is it a much older thing, an archetype, the recurrent icon of youth, be it the golden age of boombox or the fabulous Sixties?

Yeah i agree Sal, i personally was blown away by the resto. I had been saying to Dave how i fancied doing a bmx but the sight of this put me right off lol. The attention to detail that went in was awesome and made me think "meh i will never get it to that standard"

If i did one id have to ride it to, i could admire it for a bit but id have to ride it !!

Dave, like all work you do, you totally nailed this! It was so much fun following your resto via whatsapp after seeing the bike in real life at the Manchester meet last march. You went totally went all-in, took no hostages. Can imagine it set you back a few bucks, but the result is an immaculate bike that i like to take out for a few double backflip 360 Tailwhip Break-My-Spine .....Fakie

Kudos Doc, u rule big time!!

I can never afford one of these BMX bikes the only nice bicycle I ever owned in my life was my original Schwinn Stingray I got in the late seventies and I had it all the way through high school. I must have pedal to the moon and back in my lifetime on that Stingray. It had like a badass Mickey Thompson drag slick tire on the back it was f****** awesome.

The guy I work for has a miniature kids version of the stingray and it's an original one from the back in the day. He bought it new now he lets his grandkids ride it. I'll take a picture of it next time I'm there.

I gave him a piece of steel wool to polish the Chrome in the motherfucker still ain't done it lol.

This restoration is just amazing. Putting the same skills, love and care that you put into your radio collection into this BMX bike has transformed a solid survivor into a a work of art.

I have had the opportunity to have seen many solid pictures of radios and BMX bikes for the magazine. Ton's of pictures have been submitted and many, including pictures of SLO's bikes and radio's have made it in the magazine.

Seeing this bike to together with the M70 floods the mind with memories....

For me, many memories of BMX bikes we of jealousy. I never had a proper BMX bike as a kid. My folks just didn't have the money for stuff like that. I cobbled together a few cheap attempts at a cool bike, but they were all crap. My parents best friends had children that were the same age as my sister and I. I wouldn't exactly call them "friends" as we were mostly just cast together whether we liked it or not. Those kids were super spoiled and when the BMX craze hit, the son had all the best. He also raced BMX bikes and quickly picked up a sponsorship from the small family owned company HUTCH. I remember him having 5-6-7 of these bikes in his garage, all custom one off's. Of course he didn't care and hated them all. He wanted something else and complained and pouted about it all the time. He had piles of spare parts, frames, ect. But refused to part with anything, mostly because he knew I didn't have anything, so he used it to hold over my head.

Later, when he gave up racing, he sold all the bikes dirt cheap and even threw some of the frames away. A few of the frames he purposely cut with a hacksaw so no one else could use them. I was so devastated when I found out he just through them out instead of even offering anything to me. I was bummed for a long time after that. Just part of youth I guess.

Again, great build DOCS, it's been a great ride down memory lane with ya!
