Hey BASS freaks...got a new experiment brewing. I've been using these small 6.5" Taiwan subwoofers for various boombox projects & have been very impressed with their sealed box performance. I decided to try making an 8 subwoofer box using these little BASS cannons. The theory is that 8 of these would equal the same amount of cone area as 1 large 21" subwoofer, roughly but the advantage is each smaller woofer is more efficient, using a lighter, faster cone, each with it's own 2" voicecoil that can handle 80 watts RMS each...

Also, having 8 drivers working in unison uses the phenomenon of multiple driver coupling. Every time the number of drivers are doubled, the acoustic output is bumped by +3db for the same watts input. For example, 2 woofers driven by 5 watts will be 3db louder acoustically, than the same 5 watts into 1 woofer. So, having 8 woofers would have a 9db gain over a single woofer of the same characteristics. from coupling. Also, having small multiple drivers will be much more efficient than a large(21") woofer that would require a large, heavy, hard to move cone or diaphram....

Here's some pics of my progress so far & a video of the first test run will follow soon...

Here's a shot of the 4 chamber box I made of 3/4" MDF board. The drivers are already attached to the face & wired in series/parallel to present an even 8 OHM load to the amplifier..

Each chamber is 1.0 cubic feet & finished with dynamat & fiberglass insulation along the back wall

Here, the drivers are installed & the box is assembled...the divider to the left is the center of the box & will be part of a side vented chamber to be finished soon...

All 8 woofers are visible in this shot...I can't wait for the test run...

Below is the Velodyne DPS 10 plate amplifier I'm going to use to power this setup. It pushes 175 watts RMS into 8 OHMS & is plenty of power to push this extremely efficient setup...

I'm also using a very good digital Subwoofer EQ to tailor the respose & tune the setup...

Video of a test run coming soon....

Reminds of this Reddit thread where they put nine 6.5" woofers against a single 18" and the results look impressive.

This experiment is exactly proof of concept right there...The only difference here is they used a heavy duty 6.5" subwoofer where I'm using a much more efficient driver requiring a lot less power to drive vs. a high wattage car sub...big big difference... :-D

the other issue I see with this experiment is they used the exact same cabinet size & venting for both setups but obviously, the 9 6.5's will have different cabinet & venting requirements vs the 18" driver & probably robbed the multi-driver setup of efficiency & bottom end.

Video coming shortly...

I love that sub box reminds me of some of the 90s car audio .that velodyne amplifier is not cheap .awesome job on that box!.

First test run with some modern dub...

each pair of 6.5" subs are in a 1 cubic foot chamber with four separate chambers inside. The box is heavy enough & damped with deadmat & fibrglass insulation which renders the enclosure almost completely dead, zero resonance artifacts...

More to come...

Ok....update time...I had to build another shallow box to house the Velodyne plate amp using basic woodworking skills...not pretty but pretty functional...

below, the amp is cut into the top and attached to the main woofer cabinet...

on the left you can see the bottom of the cabinet with rubber feet attached..

Below you can see the woofer array which will be mostly hidden & firing out of the double box slots...

All finished & sitting in my living room corner ready to rock the house for those great action adventure movie sounds...

The best part for me is all you see is a slot at the bottom of what looks like a cabinet table....

Here is one of the slickest all digital subwoofer specific EQ's I've ever had the pleasure of owning...anyone who wants that bottom octave true subwoofer sound should have one of these for their home theater setup...was about 100 bucks US plus shipping...

EDIT: I've learned that Elemental Designs is no longer in business & these units are no longer available...a real shame... :'-(

More to come later.... :-D
