Fellow enthusiasts,
For a while now I have had an eye for the classic mono, or "half a boom"
I've seen some classy styes on line but I have yet to develop my personal collection.
Perhaps as I often do, I can live my collectors dream vicariously through you.
Let us use this thread to post pictures of just beautiful Mono.
I wish that I could kick it off right but sadly I have but one.
She's a cutie though.

Cheers OSS :afro:

Good post OSS!
Monos do not get much props, except the JVC RC550,some of us get tired of seeing those all the time,LOL! jk.   ....
This is my best Mono. It is a Sharp pretty rare GF6000. It is pretty loaded with stuff like separate bass/treble 2 way speakers with an actual real tweeter :w00t: removable pop out mic, lighted tuning dial,vu meter ,APSS music search and l much more.
It is built like a tank and pretty heavy for it's size. It also takes 8 D cells....... :dunce:  :stereo:

My first box was a mono. I loved it so, but my parents had me sell it for my first stereo box. I wish I could find one like it again, but the brain cells that could have helped me identify it have long since died. I keep hoping some one will post a pic of one to shock my memory. I think I bought it new in the spring of 81'.

as a side note there is tons of music recorded in mono that a lot of people would not even guess.
alot of the early sun stuff was in mono.
also a bunch of the early ventures stuff.
hmmm maybe one of the most famous tracks in mono was the beach boys good vibrations. in fact i think brian wilson was pretty into mono recordings in general beacause he was also deaf in one ear as well.
a good mono recording can sound absolutely fantastic.
there is still people who are kind of cult about mono recordings. seriously tho i think there is a ton of rockabilly stuff that is still recorded in mono.
i like stereo recordings and i can get the stereo effect even tho i am deaf in one ear.
as for fm sounding better on mono. i am not sure.
i mean with a good four gang reciever the reception with a decent antenna or better yet cable can be pretty damn nice.
with a five gang reciever your pretty close to cd quality sound.
i kind of like lofi stuff tho. i mean if low fi wasnt cool sounding i think there is entire genres of music that would not exist.
i mean there is a lot of modern music made in the last quarter century of so that really sounds great beacause of recording limitations and or lofi sampling in general.
i mean a distorted guitar solo does sound pretty cool on a transitor pocket radio . mono boxes are pretty cool.

Almost all of the early Beatles stuff was mastered in mono, with stereo mixes done only an afterthought (often just with vocals on one side and instruments on the other). The songs were meant to be heard on AM radio... meaning MONO!

Here's probably my best mono: the National Panasonic 5410. Killer looks, heavy, tons of features (including light, memory, separate bass and treble, swivel mic), and sweet sound.

It also came in a "dull" version (which I don't have) (translation: photo stolen).

Here's my most unusual mono, an NEC RM-248RE that my wife brought home from a flea market in Budapest a couple of summers ago. It's nothing to write home about, feature-wise, but check out that FM band. From what I know, Eastern Bloc countries used those low FM frequencies "back in the day" so that folks in other countries couldn't listen in and so Eastern Bloc citizens couldn't receive FM stations from the "outside world."

Oh Yeah!!
I'm seeing some nice half -a- boom going on here.

Skippy, nice sharp with the removable mic,
Thanx for kicking off this thread with a cool quality piece.

Blah blah, rightious collection you have there,
don't make me come to your house and clean them. :-P

Awesome boxes Bill,
I've wanted that old school Hitachi since I first saw the photo of it.
my favorite is a black and chrome box.

Boomshaka, an outstanding Panny
and very interesting Budapest box with the low FM stations.

VS thank you for filling the outrageous quota of this thread
with that amazing space-age Domotec thingy
and that rare Jonan with imitation wood grain and a clock with dials. Cheers OSS :afro:

VS, you have so many unique styles and brands in your collection that I can't decide what I like best. I think it's a tie between the Philips 470 with the world map and the woodgrain Jonah with the analog clock. Come to think of it, tho, I'm also really attracted to Karaoke machines like your big Philips amp. So,. I guess my vote for "best one" is... ALL OF THEM!!!! :w00t:

(Got any more? :-D )
