We take this little fella everywhere we go - BBQs, the beach, bush walks etc. It’s plenty loud and is nice and bassy with the passives. It will run all day on a charge and recharge a couple of phones via the rear USB power outlets.
Total build cost - around $100 AUD.

Back in the old days, analogue Boombox amps tended to be giving their all at around 50-60% on the volume dial - incidently the level that most loudness circuits reduced their affect). Crank it any harder and you ended up with increasing levels of distortion particularly when power sapping bass was part of the sound track. But you remained in complete control of the sound signature.
Enter the modern era of BT speakers and their sound signature altering algorithms. Just like the vintage boxes, bass performance is strong up to around 50-60% volume. Beyond that level, the algorithms begin to hollow out the sound by gradually pulling out the lows to eliminate distortion. Now many consumers love this setup as they can turn it up to 100% volume without excessive distortion. They consider the amp to be top quality and very powerful to remain ‘distortion free!’
But the downside of all this techno intervention is you end up with a BT speaker with the bass offered by a small pocket radio with overly forward mids and highs.
So in other words, with modern BT speakers, you’re not really in control of the sound signature.
The work around is to build your own box with an amp without algorithm limiters. Due to the strong RMS power output of 12 volt+ class D amps, the speakers are always very well driven.
High sensitivity speakers will deliver a very powerful sound output at high volume level settings WITHOUT the frustrating, artificially induced bass reduction.
