Brother made it all the way to the Kennedy Center Honor as the first Rapper to be honored!

During my teens years I rocked LL's tunes on my M-90 and had the time of my life during those special days that I truly miss so much!!

Congrats LL and to the rest of the honorees which are a pretty interesting group to say the least.

DMC & MC Lyte performance was off the chain too bad there are no videos available at this time.

That's really cool. He's always seemed like a really good guy. I actually knew him more through his acting more first, because growing up I wasn't allowed to listen to rap/hip-hop. It wasn't until only a few years ago I got into his music and it turns out I actually love a lot of it.

Way to go LL

Nice one LL, been around a long time and more than paid dues so he deserves this.

Great recognition of a great artist! After hearing him first around '84 I was a fan. Keep in mind that there was not much information about rap, its roots and birth etc. where I come from (Netherlands - Europe). Because I knew kids from the city who had rap tapes of American artists and radio shows, I got more and more interested.
Maybe it had to do with the fact it was hard to come by or the totally different music compared to what my parents listened to. However, in my quest for more information and music I must have watched this documentary a million times. It was originally broadcasted in '86 on Dutch television, made by a guy who had the only radio show that played rap back then. Amongst other legends and founders it features a very young LL Cool J and his grandmother :-) (where he lives at that time). Enjoy!

Thanks for posting that video Hurb!

I think the guy did a good job filming and interviewing these cats in the wild. Very cool hearing each giving their own opinion on the movement.

Its great isn't it! What do you think these guys themselves think when they see it now :-)

On one of my New York visits a few years ago I went on the Hush Hip Hop birthplace Tour: https://www.hushtours.com/nyc-hip-hop-tours/
I met Cold Crush member JDL (Wilson) and heard a lot of cool stories about the beginning period. Highly recommend the tour!!
