Hoping some one can help with this gremlin. The only way to get power to my GF777 is when the cassette play button is pressed. For example to listen to the radio, function switch set to radio, power switch set to on, but nothing. Press play and radio springs to life, press stop and the whole unit powers down.

Anyone come across this.?

Appreciate any suggestions.

Sounds like a bad power switch .
this model is known for that weakness. Have you tried wiggling the power switch to see what happens?.

Is there an FAQ for the 777 anywhere? despite being a known problem, not found a single google search on how to fix it.

Anyone?

It might be one of the leaf switches on the tape deck , check the one on the down position and see if there's a gap in the contacts or if the switch is broken.

Lots of contact spray, but that does not appear to be the issue. And Leaf switch? Not sure what that is or what it looks like?

I did find this switch advertised and noticed the curved round bit, I don't have that on my switch, is it normal? Could that be the issue?

If you're missing that spring it will cause problems, you are probably not getting a connection when you flip the switch.

Something so small and yet so important, no chance of finding another. Can I get away with simply soldering a piece of wire between the 2 points?

Apart from connectivity, not sure how the spring interacts with the switch, it stays up/down when you flick it?

That spring makes the electrical contact and hold the switch in position when up. I think you could just wire in a different switch and but done with it. Also try to put a jumper wire across the pins on the switch just to see that power is present first.

You will need a switch because otherwise you won't be able to turn it off. You only need a simple switch that you can wire in place of the leaf switch. If you can get the original it might be worth it in the long run if that's the actual problem which is what it seems like because these are always fuking up
.

Yep, a screwdriver to push the contacts and the unit lights up. Result! A new switch is a good idea, providing it looks original from the outside. This one tiny switch is up for £40.

You could just Add a switch to it and leave the old one in place just for looks just mount the switch somewhere else out of sight or wherever you want.

hmmm....beyond my skill set to do that. Its a shame, for the sake of a 5mm piece of metal.

Going to try and replicate the missing spring, there must be a way (I hope).

Thanks for the help.

yes this is a common problem
I would advise anyone opening a 777 to look for small parts in the box
this and another micro switch on the bottom of the tape mech are very often broken
