I've got myself a Philips D8444 and the sound is as poor as everyone says, plus it's old and worn out. Sitting in a box in my loft are a pair of old but imaculate JPW mini monitors with the following specs

Freq range - 70Hz to 20Khz plus/minus 3db at 2m on axis

Sensitivity - 87Db at 1m for pink noise input of 1Watt

Impedance - 6 ohms nominal

Power Rating - 70 Watts continuous

Drive Units - 135mm paper cone base unit with rubber surround. 14mm dome tweeter with ferro-fluid damping

Now bearing in mind that I don't understand half of what the specs mean. Would it be worth fitting these speakers and tweeters in place of the crappy plastic mids and piezo tweeters or would I be wasting my time?

I swapped mine out for a pair of car 2 way speakers I had knocking around and there was a good improvement. Not mind blowing but definitely better

Cool. I'd still like to know how compatible they are though

They appear to be good specs on those replacements. Be sure to check the original speaker specs and check the text on the speaker connections at the out side. What you aim to do is match the impedance as best as possible to the original design.

What's the ohm rating of the original speakers?

Also 87 sensitivity isn't all that great. It's OK, but it's just average. You could easily find some that are 90+

I haven't looked at the original speakers yet (I just assumed they'd be 4 ohm). You're right there are better speakers, it's just that I had these lying fallow in the loft

Well if they're 4 ohm you should stick with 4 ohm, because 6 ohm replacements would need more power to drive.
