Hi All,

I just joined yesterday and got a warm welcome from blu_fuz. Happy to be a part of this great community!

I'm just getting into the 80s boxes and have started off with a JVC RC-M70, which I am loving so far. Found a Clairtone 7978 in my area for sale for $200 CAD (they said they would take $150). Is this a reasonable price for a fully functional and relatively clean 7978?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

Thanks for the input Northerner! I will be picking it up this weekend! I'm also drooling over a Helix HX-4635 on eBay right now, but it's already bidding out of my price range haha.

Hey everyone just wanted to send an update. Picked up this box and it looks great (complete, good overall shape, everything works). It needs a very thorough cleaning though. It's got quite a bit of filth on it and the volume pot needs a desperate clean with some Deoxit. I'll be taking it apart soon and cleaning it from top to bottom.

Umm.....I will not disclose how much I paid for mine. No deals like that around here. The only thing I can say is at least I got lucky in the sense that I had no idea about the Gold version or that it existed until after my purchase so it made it bitter sweet :-)

They are talking about 7978, not the 7980 ;-)

Mine is Rising SRC-2005, one of my first boomboxes, and i absolutely love it!

Oh yeah I would have grabbed a 7980 for $150 in a heartbeat haha.

Took the 7978 apart last week, blew all of the dust out with compressed air, sprayed deoxit on all of the pots and switches, and all of the crackle and pop when adjusting volume is gone. Sounds crystal clear when playing tapes. Anyone else got one of these? I'm just curious on the FM reception. Doesn't seem to pick stations up too clearly unless they are very close by. I am comparing it to my M-70, which is ridiculously amazing at picking almost anything up crystal clear. Just wondering if I may need to make some internal adjustments on some of th VRs to help or if it's just not got the best tuner in it.
