Received my package from Ukraine. The guy threw in a power supply and blank cassette as bonus. Thought it's a bargain already.

Cosmetically, it looks in quite decent shape for the age. Like it was used, but not by someone who's a total ogre...

Have not played it yet, as I don't know how and I don't want to ruin it by doing something wrong.

Will translate Japanese this weekend but if you have a primer or a lead for the manual, that would be appreciated!

OK I am just back from sending the misus to her trip and I've had about 30 minutes to play with it...

First, the free adapter I got with it was absolute shhh!
I tried it first and got super scared as there was a lot of humming and even some "skzzzt" electic noises when I am operating switches.
I didn't stay longer than a few seconds each time, figured this was a risk.

I pulled out a 12v (case says 12-15) multi-adapter. 12 is the last setting and I guess there wouldn't be much amperage there. but!!!
We got result!

Thanks to the above picture, I figured the lead in, l/r and playing with the switches, I managed to turn it on - nice sound!
Really more detailed than I expected. It's adding a little bass, which is absolutely fine and expected of a machine with this intention.
It's trying to make the music dancy but you don't have to be drunk to enjoy the sound!

Problems:
1. Radio is quite hard to tune. I have to play with the antennae as well. I guess that just my spoiled butt.
2. Can't quite get the radio to be super clear. Some tiny humming still audible - was that normal for the time?
3. Something's loose in the right speaker, might have to open it up

To do:
1. Waiting for my real DAC to get some proper sound source. All my stuff is 3.5 out for listening, how did I live so long without a DAC and line out?!
2. Work on a manual! Gonna take a picture and number all the interesting elements. I'll make sure to translate and contextualize everything and do my best to provide operating instructions. I'll publish my findings and I hope you will scrutinize and improve.
3. Buy batteries and play this thing old school because I ain't got the exact adapters.

Have two of this model. Great look, great sound. Both departments are among the very best in boombox world. But built quality and reliability are nowhere close to that. Very cheap built quality. And a cassette mechanism that is dead and un-repairable most of the time :bang: . For me, Toshiba is the worst brands among those from Japanese, regarding built quality. I think I will never buy any Toshiba box.

Good luck with your restoration work!

Best result yet: Decent cassette, playing from the Marantz with dolby B on, line out -> line in, both devices on battery power.

Now I can see what all the fuss is about!

The Marantz is playing like a champ, no pfff, sound is clear, out there to get ya... The Toshiba is providing very decent speakers with lots of stage, decent bass, clear mids, restrained highs.
Dialed the volume all the way - can't say there's no distortion, but everything's respectable.
I mean, if you are blasting music this high, you are drunk anyway :)

Loving it! And I ain't even done. Next week I am getting my DAC and then we will see what it's got!

Too bad the cassette on the toshiba is bust
