Hi guys!

I'm quite new to boombox collecting and have recently acquired a Sharp gf 777 :-)

I love it but it needs some work doing on it to make it tip top.

Just a few of the things that need fixing are:

1. Tape one plays slow and the cassette door is slightly loose.

2. The sound knob is loose and while it does work it will need to be fixed firmly into place again

There are probably other things that need doing so it probably needs a good look over by someone who knows more about these things.

I don't have the knowledge to fix these things myself so I was wondering if any of you guys know any good places in London that I can take it to get it sorted out.

Any help on this would be appreciated. :-D

Matt.

Thanks, I may have to think about doing it myself if I can't find anywhere to do it, while I am a practically minded kind of guy, this kind of repair is outside of my experience. :-/

agree with Si.....we all started at the beginning.....when you strip it down, just take loads of pictures and put the dismantled parts in order you took them off...

There are plenty of threads about fixing all boxes on here and over on s2go......

Manuals are available on the net, usually free to download...

Good luck

Thanks guys, I think I might give it a go, I don't usually require much encouragement to pull things apart and put them back together! :-)

There is a cracking guide on here for deck repair/belt replacement, if you follow it word for word you cant go wrong really. I used it the first time i did a 777 and it was excellent.

Hey guys, so with a little elbow grease I managed to replace the belts on my 777Z and adjusted the pot and now the tape deck is running well.

I also rebuilt the left nib that holds the bottom of deck 1's door, someone had tried to do it before with a screw and bodged it, luckily I have 30 years of model making experience and rebuilt the nib with a short length of plastic rod and modeling putty, now the door works fine and is in correct alignment with the deck.

Now on to the other stuff wrong with it, the biggest being the volume knob, its a bit wobbly, I had a look at it when I had the unit in pieces, and it looks like the problem is inside it.

Do you guys think it would be worth trying to open it up and fix it? Or would I be better off buying a replacement?

As far as I remember plastic doors hinges wear out causing the wrong cassettes positioning and all kinds of problems as a result...

Check for play on the back plate of the volume pot ,look to see if the tabs that hold the pot together are crimped enough to eliminate deflection of the shaft. Also check where the legs of the volume pot assembly are seated firmly to the board and look for detached solder joints on the bottom of the volume pot assembly. the only other thing is if the fingers inside the pot are bent or broken.

the whole thing is securely fixed to the board, and the tabs holding it together are in their original position, the problem seems to be inside, as its only the shaft that wobbles, not the whole assembly.

The shaft could be bent, if the knob was bumped at one time. Trying to bend it back usually ends with mixed results, usually better, but almost never perfect again. It is also risky and could cause the shaft to snap off entirely or damage the pot body. If not too bad, you are probably better off living with a little wobble than to try to straighten it.
