Hey all,

Not 100% confirmed yet but I just got a fixed price offer through for a GX-88Z monster boombox that I've had my eye on. If the deal holds up, it should be mine for $90 NZ (about 55 - 60 US) - the woofers all need foaming and the cassette deck needs love (as always) but it's very complete and cosmetically really good.

Hope to have some more news very soon !

Cheers,

Yes mate, I just let it sit a few days and didn't see a relist so I flicked him a question on one of his other listings. He came back to me, so I dropped him an offer and he took it.

By far the biggest issue with this box is the speakers. There's a bit of vinyl peel going on and all four woofers do need foaming. They're a bit awkward to get out - the grills have to be prized off and then the speakers are held in with torx of all things. The crossovers are pretty crappy and the connector wires are going to need replacing.

On the plus side, the box itself works great. There's a couple of scratchy sliders and one tape deck needs belts but where's the surprise in that lol. The aerial is intact and straight and all printing on the box is intact. It needs a bloody good clean so I'll be getting to that shortly.

I'm wondering though - with the woofers - refoam for originality or replace for quality / sanity ? What would you guys do ? I can refoam them myself, no problem, but maybe I should just pick up some new units ??

I bet those speakers are going to be pretty basic so I'd upgrade them to some quality new units.
I might do mate, prices of new units are a bit steep here though. I was thinking some 6" coaxial car speakers might work, although most of those are 4 ohm and the Sharps are 8 ohm (and not coaxial of course). It might screw with the sound too much too if I deviate from standard....

Started work on the speakers. Decided for originality and cost to restore them rather than replace.

I cleaned all the old foam off last night, and coloured the cones with a Sharpie. Just waiting on replacement surrounds now, all the drivers tested good.

Wow, so there's particle-board directly behind the plastic. Usually only the side and back walls are particle board.

OK, speaker resto completed. This thing sounds great. Standard twin deck box on top for size comparison !!
