Hello from rainy Scotland (we're still waiting for the summer to start). I'm Paul and the last (only) ghetto blaster I owned was a Hitachi 3D super woofer, back in the eighties. I've been using a dab radio in the garage and I thought it would be fun to hide the dab and wire it to an old school ghetto blaster. So far I haven't bought anything but I find myself drawn to the Sharp GF range. How difficult is it to play music from an external source through one of these old things? Any and all advice is welcome. Cheers

Hello mate and welcome.

There are various ways to play a device through a boombox.

If it has a dedicated RCA line in it is simple to get a twin rca to 3.5mm lead and hook up almost and device with a 3.5mm jack. If there are no true RCA line in there may be a 5 pin DIN line in and leads exist for these to but bear in mind these sometimes require the play key to be depressed on tape deck. If there is what looks like an RCA line in but has "Phono" on it you may need an attenuator to adjust the frequency to make it sound proper.

You can also get an FM transmitter, these plug in to a 3.5mm jack (ipod, laptop etc) and will transmit around your house and you can tune your box to a unused fm frequency and listen. I have one made by a company called Crane and it is very good.

THe GF range you mention often have "Phono" style line in (GF9090 and GF9191) so need an attenuator but others in the range have a proper RCA line in. Let us know any boxes you are interested in and we can advise. There are plenty of ways of playing to them though

Welcome from the rainy North!

You can get a DAB adapter that's designed for the car...it picks up the dab signal then transmits it on fm. I've got a couple, forget who makes them but can check if you're interested :-)

Oh and I love the higher GF range...easy to find in the uk too

Welcome aboard, newbie. Get yourself a Sharp GF-8989 and don't look back.
The 6060 was the first one that caught my eye. It really has the look I'm after and yep I like the 8989 and the big beast 525/555

Get bidding!

Don't go for the GF6060, it has the look but not the sound, aim slightly higher up the GF range and you will be good :)
I went for this. I was seduced by the twin tape deck. I just hope I can make it work. I know very little about electronics

These are totally fixable. The twin deck makes it a bit more complex but still doable. The 525 was one of first ones I got too. We'll keep you right don't worry :-)
