Today i stripped down the tape deck of my GF555 to see if i could sucessfully replace the capstan rollers with some tube i had as it was chewing tapes. I used a video on Youtube that made it look like a 10 min job and before i knew it i was in up to my head. Everything appears to have gone together again fine and the capstan appears to be working so i have stopped it from chewing up tapes. However i really should have got some belts as they appeared to be ok but it now plays slow and is very quiet.
Does anyone know a cheap source for belts? I am UK based and the sellers on Ebay want around £25 for 5 rubber bands. Is there a cheaper way to source these?

How is the tape speed adjusted on this mechanism in case i need to tweak it later? I presume the heads are adjusted with the left screw when looking at the head from the front.

Its frustrating i will have to do this all again when i finally get some belts

ive done loads of this deck type, speed adjustment is on the motor, seams odd that its now playing quite, has the mec gone back in correctly (play back switch) , have you pushed the rubber tube down the capstan pin about 2 mm after you pushed the capstan pin in , did you make sure you got all the black goo out if the old rubber turned to goo

make sure once the rubber tube is in that you push it back slightly so it dont rub at end of the capstan pin holder as this will slow the motor speed
