Hiya,

I'm cleaning and servicing a Panasonic RX-FW17L (Twin Deck mini) and noticed a difference between Deck 1 and Deck 2.

On Deck 2 (Rec/Play) there is a wire spring attached to the capstan but a similar spring is not present on Deck 1 (Play), is a wire spring supposed to be in Deck 1 (therefore missing in this case) or is this wire spring not supposed to be on Deck 1? If this is missing, what will the effect to functionality be?

Thanks in anticipation.

Many thanks. In the above image the deck buttons keys are at the bottom, I took the photograph with the deck upside down ( ) and I can see no other way that the return spring would fit.. I had a play with the deck controls after reading you comments and found that the return spring does exactly as you say, the lack of the return spring on the other deck doesn't seem to affect the deck operation. There are no loose parts rattling around anywhere within the casing so, perhaps, I'm worrying over nothing? Once I've finished the work I'll reassemble and do full tests on both decks looking for any problems.

So.......I guess,no problems???☺
I've not progressed with this just yet as I was distracted by other things and then found the plastic tuning strip had separated into 3 pieces, despite trying a micro thin metal adhesive tape and then 5 different types of adhesive, I just cant get the parts joined up again. It's far to thin to weld with a soldering iron so I'm still experimenting with other adhesives. So far, the glues have cost me almost as much as the radio did! :w00t:  Never mind, eh - it will surely pay off to prevail. :hmmm:

Yeah,I hear you m.o.m. sometimes the little parts can be a bitch. Have you tried using a hot glue gun on that part? Hot glue has helped me out a time or two. Hay that rhymed. I'm a poet and didn't even know it!
Thanks for the reply. I don't have a hot glue gun (yet). I also considered reinforcing the strip with a thin piece of plastic strip but it would have to be mega-then as the channel for the tuning strip has only a tiny amount of space - and I do mean tiny! I have yet to find a glue that will adhere to the plastic strip, I think it's a tuning strip plastic attitude problem I'm dealing with!

I'll consider buying a beater donor box if I can find one with the same tuning strip because this mini sounds is such a pleasure to listen to.

Now I've seen those pannies on eBay and they don't look like they'd sound all that good. They look like they came from the downfall era. Somewhere around 87 or 88. Still they do look like they have some potential. Can you tell me a bit about the quality of sound on these minis? I to have a soft spot for Panasonic mini's,and have a fair few of them.☺☺☺

This model, and the FM14 single deck version, sound pretty good for the size but I'll have to come back to you on this for an all new & fresh update as the FM17 is still on the operating table with duty nurse trying to fix the tuning strip.*

*How often have you read 'nurse' and 'strip' in the same sentence on this forum, huh?! :-D

O.K. that's what I thought. No worries Christine, I often get mixed up on many things. When you get her fixed I'd still like to hear your thoughts on why this is an enjoyable mini to listen to. I may wanna get one myself. As I said I've got quite a few Panasonic minis. Sincerely,Ralph.☺☺☺

Will do. I have a memory that is adversely affected by PTSD as well as every day forgetfulness just like anyone else but, at my age, I'm beginning to wonder. I mean, I'd not like to end up in a Care Home For The Confused & Bewildered for all the wrong reasons! :w00t: :-D
