Your choices are limited to the dimensions of the original speakers. JVC does not waste any space in their designs. I Mod my JVC's & other radios with DISCO LED systems to make them unique & I found it hard to find any spare room inside that case. The 838 Chassis doesn't have any room to go larger than the original JVC woofers but you can pop a set from an M50 in there & they are coated like the M90 woofers which is a better sounding speaker, by far. M70 woofers would be my 2nd choice....Both M70 & M50 speakers are identical to the 838 drivers in physical dimensions & magnet but the 3 have different cones, suspensions, etc.

Hope this helps...

A great topic and I believe most RC-838 owners are thinking about doing this!

To me, RC-838 looks second to none but sounds less. My next mod (my 1st mod on this unit is LED tuning and VU meter lighting) on this unit is speaker upgrade.

I may even come with some ideas or search findings later.

the leds in the tuner and vu meters was it a hard mod I was thinking I'd like to do the same with a sound controller so the music goes to the bass or something if that's not possible then just green lights I thought would be cool what did you need for this mod

I believe the ohms might be different on the JVC from those rights there. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but aren't 838 speakers 6 ohm? I'm not sure though.

Also those are just subwoofers, so they won't produce any mids. So all you'll get is deep lows along with some highs from the tweeters.

Look for a mid-bass or preferably full-range speaker

I spotted some low profile subwoofers there must be some options for new technology but you are totally right when you say there's no room in that box
The woofers in the 838 are 3.2 OHM drivers & the ones you picked above will not work well at all & I doubt if they will fit because the baskets are too large in diameter at the back side where they meet the magnets....It would be close but I'm guessing it wouldn't fit & also, like someone else said, you need a good full range woofer, not a sub for this application. When I modded my 838 with LEDs, I had a tough time finding room for the controller card. That's how little room is in there.

Having installed my newly found sub woofer on JVC RC 838. Now it definitely has much stronger bass and a bolder look:

The one in the back still uses the original JVC subwoofers, to allow some visual comparison.

I choose to upgrade my JVC RC 838 with brand new sub woofers by Feilo, a Chinese manufacturer of sub woofers for more than half a century and is still making such in the older way. YD-165 9B fits into the position flawlessly and seamlessly, no drilling required (though a little bit tight on the right side).

These speakers output 10 W Max. and improve the bass drastically. After this upgrade, my RC 838 looks greater and sounds so much better.

Sorry, my questions were answered by the previous post which I didn't see when I submitted. Couldn't figure out how to delete my post, only edit.

Could you share a website where you ordered the feilo YD-165 9B?

sweet replacement cans for sure...that is epic!!! those new woofers are very close in dimensions to the originals with slightly bigger magnets & huge chrome dustcaps...love it!!!....Awesome job finding these as a replacement....
