Wether radio or cassette my volume is super low when volume slider is up full have to put your ear on the speaker grill to hear anything but it is playing
Could it be dirty sliders ? my other jvc838 crackles when you touch the sliders or mode switch I bought it today I couldn't pass it up at 30$
Ether way both need servicing I was just hoping it might be something I could do myself

Yeah the sliders and switches are likely in need of some TLC, tear into that thing bro!
Opened it up this afternoon used a q tip and contact cleaner and still no luck sounds exactly the same and the amount of dirt I got out of the sliders was intense could it be an amp I'm wondering ? It cost me 30 and was supposed to be a parts box but I actually want both my rc 838s up and running

You bet it's worth trying to fix. Does the bass, treble, volume, etc. work normally on the radio?
If so, that narrows it down to the tape circuits.
The record mode switch is a common culprit, it's that long silver switch on the circuit board, connected to the record button

When you say the radio is the loudest, does that mean it sounds like it's playing at what you would consider normal operating volumes?

If not, then I misunderstood you. If all of the modes are suffering from lack of full volume in to some degree, then it could be something wrong with the speakers or amp caps. I'm not familiar with this model so I'm not sure if the amp chips get quiet or die completely when they fail.

All modes the volume lacks with volume cranked it plays softly the static is almost louder than the music
but seems to be loudest at 3/4 volume if you find that sweet spot
in comparison to my other 838 playing at the same volume as the troubled one I'm talking about that's low
my good 838 rocks my house at 3/4 volume
