I'm getting tired of my two shite boomboxes and I need something fresh to start a cool collection, but I wanna be exposed to more decent models. Anyone know any that are cheap, but sound and look great? I'm into the ones that look kinda similar to the JVC RC-M90 or the Lasonic TRC-931, but those are WAAAY out of my budget. Can anyone make any recommendations?

What is your idea of cheap? I'm actually getting a few of mine ready to sell..
Under $250. eBay is my go-to for shopping for electronics, but all the decent options are out of my budget scale. I can only sit there and dream

Gotcha. You can get a bunch of great blasters in that price range..
I made a promise to myself when I first started collecting that id never pay over $500 for ANY box..that's probably why I'll never have an M90 either..:-/

Well if you can point me to any specific models, that would be great. There are so many that it's hard to find the right one! And yeah, it's a shame that I'll never have an M90. There's one on eBay for like $2,000 and I thought to myself, "Amazing that someone might actually buy this..."

Where do you live? In Finland M70's are hard to find.. I think we dont have any. (Maby some collectors)

But yea, you can go far with 250$! Rising 20/20 or SRC-2005, Crown 850-950 and Goldstar TSR-800 to name a few. They are big cool looking boomers with a decent sound. Pretty bassy too!

Actually most i have paid for a boombox is 100 euros. But i dont usually use ePay. Just keep your eyes open locally! (I got Sanyo M-X920, Rising SRC-2005, Crown 850, Hitachi TRK-8180EM, Panasonic RX-5600LS, Sharp GF-9494, Hitachi TRK-6701W, Goldstar TSR-800[beater from epay], Silver ST-858, Hitachi TRK-8290E, Sony CFS-FM7 [and maby a Sharp GF-777 on the way ;-) ])

I know i got lucky.. But you can get lucky too!

^ Yep. You can usually find a decent working M70 for under $300, but it may need a little TLC. But if you have your heart set on it, don't overpay just to get one - I see some sellers on eBay that have them confused with M90's and/or used cars.

You beat me to it! :w00t:

The 20/20 (& AKA's) might be a great place to start - They're plentiful, usually priced well, reliable, good look, good sound, and really easy to get inside for repairs and maintenance.

A beat-up Sanyo M9994 that needs belts. Doesn't look very fly, but sounds better than any other vintage 1-piece IMHO.

I know what you´re feeling, i´ve been there too. But from this price range, i´d definitely suggest getting an Aiwa CS-600- wonderful box, is quite big, it´s well built, has colorful sound and excellent bass thanks to DSL enchancement. I highly recommend getting one.

I live in Oregon and have honestly yet to find a fellow boombox collector here. Thrift shops in my area are pretty desolate when it comes to electronics, it's usually just clothes. Nice to hear you've gotten lucky in your endeavors. The Rising 20/20 is a killer boomer, don't understand how I could ever find one for cheap though.

I've found some clean-looking ones on the Bay that just need a bit of repair to be fully functional (usually just a faulty belt). I've contemplated it, but I know nothing of repairing boomboxes! I want to get into it, but don't know how to get started :bang:

Here's a couple of my boxes you might like..
Nippon 200 same size as Lasonic TRC-931/ Rising 20/20.. Everything works! But, is missing battery cover.. Good sound too, $150
image.jpg

Realistic SCR-8, great sound for the size, excellent condition with original strap, tape deck doesn't work..$100
image.jpg
The SCR-8 was almost perfect until I read the part about the tape deck not working...Regarding the Nippon, the mustard-colored "200" on the woofers ruins the entire piece for me. Without that, it would look sick. You got any others?

That's a good deal on that SCR8, because if the tape deck worked, it would easily fetch $200+ in that condition!

Yeah, that's the problem with SCR-8's/Blockbusters..the decks are almost always broken..I think it's about 1 in a 100 that actually have functioning decks..:-/
I actually think the gold "200" is the koolest part aside from the LEDs on the Nippon..
I put a couple on the for sale section today, but you probably can't view it yet..
A Sharp GF-535 everything works! $225
View attachment 33690

Also, a CONION C-100F with mic for $350
View attachment 33691

Then, a few random smaller boxes..

Once you hit 40-50 posts you can view the for sale section..
I got the C-100 cheap, so I can sell it for cheap..I can hear the motor running on main tape deck, so belt replacement should get Deck A working again..but, tape doors are hard to find..aux in and radio work great on CONION and it's LOUD too!

Ah, so that's why. I really need to pick up on basic repair so I can get more flexible with boomboxes. My Sony CFS-45's cassette deck is running abnormally quiet and I have no idea what to do about it. :bang:

First thing to try would be cleaning the tape heads, the make a demagnetizer cassette that you play in the box for a while to clean the crud off the heads.. Maybe help the box play tapes clearer..

Completely forgotten about those demagnetizing tapes. Will have to pick one up.
