I was curious how someone might go about reverse engineering a missing remote.

Since IR signaling protocols vary by manufacturer, trying to get close with a Sharp remote from the same era for stereos would be a good start.
Then, capture that data and try to send all possible combinations of codes that can be sent with that protocol to the stereo. With any luck some of the codes will start operating the unit.

Here's a guy that tried this, but in his case he was hoping that there was a code already available to operate a feature on his stereo, and thought that the engineering team at Sony might have simply run out of space for buttons on the remote, and if he could just find the code, he could issue it himself with a universal remote trained with the code, or an app if you have an IR transmitter on your smartphone. https://www.tablix.org/~avian/blog/archives/2012/09/brute_forcing_ir_remote/

Wow, sweet looking box. Love those meters and that MASSIVE heat sink! Passive radiators too!

Good finds stereomann!
After seeing Skippy's comment at Reli's link about finding Sharp IC's inside his Yamaha YST-C11, although it's not an exact AKA I'm wondering if Yamaha also uses Sharp's remote control circuitry and some basic functions will work. I found the Yamaha on this code list for an old Radio Shack universal remote, 15-1904B. There's a 15-1904 but you need the B version to use the Yamaha code. Here's one for about $5, and the instructions.
