I have a old realistic 44-1154 model . It has a switch and is supposed to be 40 watt . It's the only one I ever had.

How do you know if it does the job? I've used it yet have no way of knowing .

I've read some say it's not needed yet my panasonic RX-CT810 manual says to do it.

What do they do? I have never used one found this thread on tape heads;

Demagnetizers remove traces of magnetism that was induced on the core of the tape head. During recording the tape path is magnetized at various strength based on the audio signal. During play back, these magnetic signals are converted to audio signals.

After extended hours of playing tape, the head might get slightly magnetized. Any induced magnetism on the tape heads can affect the sound quality. That is why we need to demagnetize it once in a while.

I understand the theory. I think you need to be able to measure the magnetic flux before and after to confirm you have a problem and then fixed it. I have read that the issues related to reel to reel aren't present with compact cassette and the demagnetisers available aren't even powerful enough to remove all the flux. Now to find a cheap one of these.

Here is a good video on that subject:

TDK makes a few models of cassettes with built-in demagnetizers. I have the TDK HD-30.

Here is a link to an HD-01

Thats a great video.
One thing in video I totally disagree with is cleaning the pinch roller with the alcohol as with our older machine's the rubber is already pretty dry and cracked causing issues with good traction of pinch roller on capstan. What I usually do in this case is see how bad pinch roller is. If its pretty dry then replacing with new one is always recommended for best results. If roller isnt to bad I prefer Cleaning with regular water and maybe mild soap and drying it right away.

I use fine grit wet and dry sandpaper or a nail file to remove the shiny residue (don't need to use cleaning fluid) this works 80% of the time. The other 20% require replacing.
