Something is wrong with the cassette deck on my unitech cx 1430. When i received it, i noticed what appeared to be some melted wiring near the erase head of the cassette deck. When I put batteries in the thing, it didn't turn on and the batteries got hot. After disassembling, I discovered that something is causing the cassette deck to short out. For the time being, I have the deck disconnected completely and the box functions fine. Any suggestions as to what could be wrong? If anyone has a cassette deck for this box I may be interested in purchasing it. Also, the stereo and wide settings on this box seem to be messed up. When on stereo and wide, the channel in the right speaker is MUCH stronger than the left. It is also visible on the VU meter. Please help.

The stereo and wide problem could be from a dirty switch. Maybe a good cleaning and lube with Deoxit would help. Do you have any pictures of the affected area of the tape deck?
