saturday - i bought this beauty off a local seller --

not quite as mint as ALL my other stuff :-D :-)

anyway --about 25% of the surrounds are missing from the left speaker
and 40% off the right side --

but the center radiator sounds SOLID --clean and loud !!

WHY is that --???
thought both outer speakers had to be very tight -
to get the pressure to the center - :-)

both side panels are MUCH too wrinkled up --
to get accurate dims for a template :'-(
----good idea though :-)

Well, my center "radiator" works even when the side speakers aren't even on

That's because someone swapped out the middle radiator and inserted a FOMOCO speaker in it's place instead and it's not even the same size ! :w00t:

So I'm looking for a passive radiator now to "fix" this.

My guess is that the radiator will work even if the side speakers aren't sealed because it's resonating the sound waves created by the side speakers, much like a tuning fork will resonate at a particular frequency. If you simply hold a piece of paper near a woofer while it's operating, the paper will vibrate too, and produce audio although it'll be more of a rattling type of noise rather than musical.

norm --
i KNEW you would have a valued opinion re this matter :angelic: :-)
thanks-----------

my other center radiator box is also an aiwa -
its a #ca-70
(3 piece design)
but on that one --i KNOW the center radiator does NOTHING at all-
unless both speakers are very tight --
on that model --all the pressure in tunneled thru a little port-
to the radiator

that may be so ?? :-D

still --you have induced another question :-O

how does one HEAR a center radiator --
how can we tell if the sound is 'a leak' -- or real ??

i put my ear on it -]
and its POUNDING out some nice semi-deep bass

Well, I'm no expert in speaker design but Passive Radiators typically help and are tuned to the lower frequencies. As we all know, low frequencies are omnidirectional so it may be hard to tell exactly where the "center" of the low frequency emission originates, right? I mean, isn't that why you can point a subwoofer towards the ground with no or minimal effect on the sound produced?

Congrats on the find!

There's a business here in Pinellas Park called Speaker World. I'm 98% sure they can fix the problem with your deteriorated foam surrounds...

re foaming those woofers is not that hard just time consuming since the woofers have to be cleaned and all the old foam residue removed ,i did several sets of these including the ones on my rxc100 and they all kicked ass when i was done,it might be easier just to send them to the speaker shop but i enjoy doing these.
