Seems fitting to make my first post now I've just bought my first boombox. Like Cretster, a few threads below, I too am from the sunny Isle of Man in the British Isles. I had various cheap hi-fi's (portable and otherwise) through my youth and now in my second youth*, I have a dedicated playroom full of Lego and old video game consoles and home computers. I thought the ideal thing to finish the retro room off nicely would be a vintage ghettoblaster so I hit up eBay and now I have an Aiwa TPR-950 on the way. Sadly, the cassette deck isn't working and although I'll be running an MP3 player through it for the time being, I'd like to make it whole again so I'll be trawling this site for info! I look forward to getting stuck in.

* "Second youth" isn't really accurate as I never really bothered with adulthood in the first place.

Welcome mate, the TPR 950 is a cracking box, really good sound and lovely to use. Tape deck is also great on it but not all that easy to work on so take lots of pics and ask any questions.

Cracking choice of box though.

I believe so. It was a bit of an accidental purchase really. I had been bidding on a Hitachi and Pioneer but was outbid and decided to take a last look through the listings before going at either of them again. The Aiwa caught my eye. It's a really handsome thing. I wouldn't normally buy something in need of attention but it's in otherwise absolutely pristine condition. I'm not mechanically or electrically competent so I may just end up finding someone to service it for me.

Welcome aboard, Nathan!! :hi:

The TPR-950 is a very handsome boombox. I have heard and read that the Aiwa units are somewhat a challenge to work on, at least the cassette decks, but I'm sure there is enough help to get it sorted.

Post pics when you can!

Hello, Nathan Wind and welcome to Boomboxery - by far, the best forum on the internet!  I've only visited I.O.M once and remember it as a very nice island, that was back in '72.

I've never had the fortune of owning an Aiwa but have heard all the same things. They are excellent boxes but very difficult to restore decks 😩. Congrats and good luck!!!

Any tips for attaching an MP3 player via the phono Line-in's? Will a modern MP3 player play nicely in terms of sensitivity levels etc. with a 30+ year old portable hi-fi?

Edit - actually, looking at it, I think it only has DIN for Line-in. Hard to tell from the photos.

It depends really, there were different models for different markets. I have one here that does have rca line in, i think the one you have bought if a euro spec one will have a phono in, you can get an attenuator to sort the sensitivity issue tho and your good to go.
