Hi all, I've got a really annoying issue with the tape mech on my 8585X. I've lubricated as much of the sliding mechanism as I can get to and most functions seem to work smoothly with the deck out of the chassis - pushing all buttons manually seems good.

When I put the deck back in the chassis however, I get a weird issue where the 'Play' function doesn't fully disengage when STOP is pressed. The issue seems to relate to the two thin sliding metal bars which run along the back of the mech - sometimes, these bars don't travel far enough when STOP is pressed to hit the microswitch and cut power to the deck. When these bars are not hitting the switch, other functions like FF / REW cannot be used either as the keys will not lock into place. If I push the ends of the bars, where they protrude from the mech, they then go a bit further and hit the microswitch, thus shutting down power and other functions can be used.

Has anyone encountered anything like this on a 8xxx tape mech ? It's frustrating because I'm trying to get the tapes to play and every so often I'm effectively locked out of the deck and have to mess around pushing those sliding bars. If the bars have not travelled far enough, the EJECT cannot be used either so the door is stuck shut with a tape in it !!! I'm testing with the front face removed at the moment to avoid getting the tape door jammed shut so any help would be great ! Thanks in advance....

Could this be related in any way to what I think is called the 'record bar', behind the deck ? I'm not sure how this connects to the tape deck, seems to be by some kind of spring loaded cam arrangement maybe.

Record bar only works when record button is depressed. My recommendation would be clean all old grease from deck and regrease all areas needing it. I had this same issue with a GE deck, the grease over time gets thick, but you have to make sure you get under every greased area 😉
