Hey all,

I picked up a VZ-3000 from our auction site a few weeks back. I saw it first time round about four months ago and missed bidding, so I grabbed it the next time it came up.

Cosmetically it's very good with all controls / switches etc present and correct. In terms of function though, the news is not so good. Some idiot had connected it to our 240v mains with the voltage selector set at 110v, so I'm now waiting for a local radio repair place to let me know whether it can be saved or not. They are going to run up the unit on their own power source, completely bypassing the Sharp PSU, to see if the unit has been otherwise damaged. The in-line fuse vaporised so I'm hoping this saved the rest of the unit from catastrophic damage.

I'm going to need a TT drive belt and door mech belt but the drive for the tone arms looks ok. I've got a few lamps out that need dealing with and the cassette deck also needs belts.

I'll report back once the radio shop come back to me - watch this space, I may be selling a ton of VZ-3000 spares !!!

Me too mate, me too. I don't THINK there's any other damage but as soon as I told the radio tech what looks to have happened, he grimaced. I said 'what's the chance of further damage' to which he replied 'huge'. He does think that new transformers might still be obtainable if it has blown so we'll have to see.

New transformer and main amp chips required at least would be my guess.

Hope it all works out ok for you.
And that could well be the end of it mate. Transformer, maybe, but mucking around swapping amp chips is not for me. I don't fancy paying a tech to do it either so it might be time to walk away if that is the extent of the damage. I'll keep you posted.

Well, here I am with an update. I just popped in to see the tech who I left the chassis with and he told me the signs are good that there's no major damage to the power supply. He's got three of the four power outputs tested and they are within spec, so after he's tested the fourth output he wants me to put the machine back together so he can diagnose it further.

At the moment, the PSU is attached to the chassis along with the amp, speaker outputs, main control PCB and tuner. The turntable and cassette mechanism are removed so I'll probably look at getting those back in so he can test further. It could well be that the chip amp is blown, which I don't really fancy replacing......

Started a bit of reassembly today by securing the power supply back into the chassis and routing the cabling a bit better. Typically, a crucial power supply wire came loose from the main supply fuse holder. This was annoying because it came loose when I initialled disassembled the unit and then the local tech re-attached it for me. Having it loose again is just very very annoying !!!!

On the upside, I've managed to mount the PSU better than it was when I got it so that's good. I've routed the wires internally better too and I've discovered that the record bar was seized in position so I've freed that up too. I now need to get myself (at least) some decent solder to repair the loose wire - I may even need a better iron so it might be time for an early birthday present......

Wow, just re-reading this thread shows how quickly things change !

I sold the VZ after giving up any hope of fixing it myself but then randomly the dude who bought it from me called me and asked if I wanted it back.

While the VZ was away, I've become quite proficient at recapping, swapping components and general trouble shooting. I jumped at the chance to get it back.

First day back, I checked the speaker outputs for DC which showed 30 volts on both channels ! This was with everything disconnected from the power amp board. I tested the pin outs of the STK463 amp and both channels carried 30v, meaning the amp is shorted out dead.

I now have it desoldered and a replacement on the way so watch this space - this puppy is getting fixed :-)

On the up side, the tuner works and so does the cassette.

Funny thing is, the guy who bought it from me is an electronics tech and he told me the amp was fine, the problem was in the EQ board, and the speakers were trashed.

I found that the speakers are fine - drivers are all good the just need a woofer refoam. The amp is bad and the EQ board is good so I guess the guy should stick to his day job of fixing other stuff.

That's hilarious. You just never know how much a tech really knows! I like that you dig in and start to probe and eliminate stuff to get to the problem. Did you already have some experience with working on electronics before you started working on stuff in the past few months?

A 3000 looks soooo much easier to work on than a 2000!
