Last year I posted about this NIB Marantz TA100 system I found at the swap meet for $75.

Since then I managed to score a Sansui glass door rack to put it all in for $20 and now....

Wait Wait Wait, hold on a second, it went like this...

Last week while at my dad's, he hit me up with these pristine 8-Track cartridges. Not really my kind of music, but free is free. I took them, even though I don't have an 8-track player.

So, fast forward a week and I was at the Ventura Swap Meet with DarkSideWill looking for Boomboxes (found non btw)

But I did find this for $15. It looked to be in very good condition. It didn't look like it spent any time out in a shed. I opened the cartridge door slot and the tape head was immaculate.

So, I wired it up to the Marantz!

OK, I have ZERO experience with 8-track players and had no hope for any sound quality expectations. BUT THIS THING SOUNDS INSANE!

ZERO tape hiss! It's like it has dolby on it. I'm sure it helps that the 8-Track tapes themselves were stored in a closet for 35 years, but the player is in 100% working condition, plays at the correct speed and has full body dimensional sound. I honestly had no idea 8-Tracks sounded this good!

It also records.....Can you say THRASH METAL SLAYER MIX!   Record right over Merle Haggard!

Now it's fully integrated into the system. I love it!

Lastly, I found this website www.8trackavenue.com that sells 2 key components for restoring 8-Track tapes. Notably, a small piece of foam that degrades over time and keeps the tape pressed against the head and a repair kit should the tape break. I also found this video that shows how to repair 8-Track tapes

AND that is why I posted in the Wanted section for an 8-Track boombox!

I think this infectious enthusiasm might spark some interest in these, that Panny sure does look cool as hell

My wife was working from home today, had some Big Band music going, my brother walks in a comments on how great it sounds. I swear I had no idea 8-Tracks had this level of fidelity.

I agree, that Panasonic has everything I need from vintage gear. LED's, aluminum face, chrome bits and knobs.

Really looking forward to doing some recording with this.

Stopped by the thrift store today and they had at least 50 Brand New 8-Track tapes there. All various artists. Most of it CR@P. But they were so cheap $2.95 for 3 and a whole rack of 12 for $5.95.

ALL OF THEM BRAND NEW!
