Hi everyone, I just signed up here, I am not really a boombox collector. I did have one when I was younger (I honestly can't remember the make).

Now here's the part where everyone is going to dislike me. I came across a JVC M-90 this past weekend at a garage sale, and I had an idea that it was one of the better boomboxes out there so I picked it up.

I asked how much, the guy said $15. I didn't say a word, i couldn't believe it. Then because i just stood there...he said, ok $10. I asked if the tape deck worked, and we tried a tape, it didn't work. So I said how about $8 because the tape deck doesn't work. SOLD. I paid the man, unplugged the box, and got the hell out of there.

So now I've done some research, and I had no idea of the value of this box.

The box is super clean and the radio works great, the sound quality is phenomenal. I only see a few issues with the box. One antenna is broken, however I can still collapse it properly and it doesn't appear broken. I am also missing one small switch knob, but that still works. The tape deck doesn't work, but the major issue is that I am missing the cassette door.

I see that parts are hard to come by, but does anyone know where I can get a cassette door for this model? Or if any other boxes cassette doors are the same as the M90?

I want to get this serviced and get the cassette function up and running. Any help would be appreciated, even if you could recommend a place in the Toronto area to get service, that would be helpful too.

Yes people just want to get rid of their old radio. That's why some M90 can still be found for cheap. You are lucky, I think every collector should have this kind of luck at least once.

...but this thing is overrated and overpriced, I would not pay for a M90 more than $300 including shipping for my personal use. Only the resell value makes it interesting to spend more money to get one. For $300 an Aiwa Exos 9 will kill it easily in terms of loudness and sound quality. Truth can be said.

Exactly. Those Aiwa things will get You no Street Cred among the classic Boombox enthusiasts. After all, that's what this is all about right? Not these new things that look like tubes, or home cubes, etc. Sure, they may sound great, but they're in a whole different category. Congratulations on Your M90 score. Good luck on Your search for replacement parts. Have patience. They'll surface.

Eight dollars is free!

You might have to make your own cassette door with plexiglass for now.

Doesn't look too bad overall .

I'm feeling sick....10 D sized batteries will cost twice what you paid for the box!!!

Too bad about the cassette deck not working. Sometimes the deck holds your tape hostage when it stops. Might be why the door is missing :judge: gotta get that tape back.

Nice find.

Wow 8 bucks!!! Score of a lifetime man, congrats! What an intro!

I agree with Adam, if your into these classic, old school pieces of history, and it reminds you of simpler times in life or childhood memories, you just cant put a price tag on something like that. Everyone collects differently and has different taste. So buy what you like, and spend what you want, wether its $8 or $1,200 afterall its your money.

Sorry for the ramble, welcome to the M90 club Narhito!!!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

Does anyone know if any other JVC model cassette doors will fit the M90?

I know the cassette deck door is going to cost me more than the box.
