Well this post is long overdue. I acquired this sweet little AIWA 990 on a trade with the famous gsbadbmr back in December of 2014. So, I finally found a great repair guy out in Los Angeles to tackle the non working cassette deck.

He was able to get this baby up and running smooth again, hopefully for many years to come. My tech replaced all belts, aligned everything, replaced the motor (twice, the first one had issues) but he got it dialed in with the 2nd motor he installed, and all controls and switches cleaned.

I was so happy to see see and hear this cassette deck working for the first time in who knows how many years, so I popped in 8 Duracell's and a cassette and strolled down the Boulevard blasting RUN DMC as all the yuppies and hipsters ate thier afternoon lunch on the patios of all the restaurants in Atwater Village L.A. Brought it home, gave it a proper cleaning, and here it is, line in works, works with batteries, tape deck works, I think its ready for another 30 years of blastin. Its a heavy, clean sounding box. Thanks goes out to Gordie for this little gem! Enjoy the pics and video, Cheers...

Wow, great radio. I had the honour of working on a members' 990 with a dead channel. Man, they are a complicated unit to take apart. It takes an age just to get access to the back of the pots/switches! And that deck! Motors are almost always fried as the belt snaps and the motor runs full time even when the tuner is in use. Grumbly motor bearings are often part of the soundtrack on these 990s!

The deck is an engineering work of art. Aiwa certainly went their own way when designing their own take on what a tape deck should be and how it should work.

The BTL amp in these 990s sure does sound stout. Build like a tank, looks to die for! What's not to like?

I'm super glad you went to the considerable trouble of getting your 990 working 100% again.

Well done and congrats,

James.... :-)

As good as the box is I found the story line in the first post entertaining to the point of distraction from the box itself - it gave me my first smile of the day so it's big "Thank you" from me!

Congrats. It's a really well built box and very complicated. One of the best elegant looking boxes
Thank you guys, I had read that these were complicated decks/radios to repair, so I was determined to find someone to get this one up and running again. My tech said that he loved a good challenge, so I gave him one. He said the old belts inside were a gooey mess, so he had his work cutout for him, but he did an awesome job. The only thing I forgot to mention is that the tape counter does work, but its missing the reset button. But Im not too concerned. He said that to replace it was a whole other ballgame because it a whole other mechanism in itself. All in all, Im very happy.

Maybe the best example of 990 out there :hmmm:

Fully functional, great sounding, and sooo clean  Mine looks like it came out a land fill
 Thanks for the compliment bro! This one has a few minor cosmetic flaws but nothing too significant. But hey, a rough 990 is better than no 990 at all! Im sure yours has lots of character. :-D
