Hi,
New to this forum! I have an opportunity to buy one of these, but the seller warns of a tendency to eat tapes. Is this a common (fixable) problem with these? I'd hate to get stuck with a lemon. Thanks.

Hello,

This sounds like belts are old, takeup reel isn´t winding a slack as it might be stuck, lube might be hardened or idler wheel´s rubber o-ring is gone bad. Definitely a deck repair here, my best guess is that o-ring is gone bad, i guess you´ll find new ones from hardware store. Good luck !

Tape deck cleaning and rebelt for sure.

Open up the radio, remove the deck mech.

Take pictures of every step along the way so you can go back and check how to put it back together. I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW YOU MUCH DO THIS! If you take pictures, this will be easy.

If it's partially working, the original belts should still be in there. Take pictures of how they are routed.

Once you have the belts out, Cut them with scissors and measure the total length, you can order new belts from here http://www.studiosoundelectronics.com/belts.htm#kit. Scroll down to find your belt TAKE YOUR TIME, READ THE INFORMATION, ORDER ONCE!

If the belts are so deteriorated or missing all together, use a small piece of string to loop round the pulleys and then measure that.

Next, clean all rubber wheels and belt pulleys with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol 90% or higher is best. Other small adjustments may be needed, but once you get this part finished, you can work on that (IF needed). It's a straight forward job that you can do. It's not that bad.

Good luck, keep us updated and in the loop, we'll help you get it working!

There could also be some wear to the cogs which operate take up. I had one go on deck A and it had two broken teeth, Belts were fine ironically.
