My Big Ben was fully working and all on a sudden the cassette section ceased to function. I took a peek and found the belts are fine and the main belt didn't slip off the flywheel.

Then I went and turned the flywheel, and found play works fine until I switch it off.

While moving the box sideways I found 1.5 cm long thin Bakelite piece at the bottom of the box. I remember these types on top of leaf switches where mechanical buttons makes contact to activate the switch. Now this could be a part from the leaf switch. Without this piece the switch will not get pressed enough to make a contact.

I went through the manual and located several leaf switches. Norm also suggested this could be due to a failure of the trigger switch that activates the motor when you press any of the tape functions.

I could locate the trigger switch M6 from the diagram but like to have a good idea on locating the position of it before I take the box apart. To me it looks like is on the left top corner of the deck mechanism when you look from the front.

I have never worked on the deck on Big Ben. As I know it is a complicated box and like to know more background information and advice before I start working on it.

I couldn't find any pictures of working on a Big Ben deck.

A picture is worth a thousand words! :-D

I love to see some pictures also on removing the deck and all.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

HI Bill,

Thanks a lot! thanks for the pictures.

Always grateful for your help!

That looks like the position of the trigger switch.

I never took it apart. I think that is it!

Since I never worked on Big Ben I need that motivation to do the exploration.

I didn't fully understand how to remove the deck mechanism out. Even though I worked on a lot of boxes the design of Big Ben is a bit complicated and makes me a little nervous. Once I know how to access the deck safely I will be fine.

That long tongue plastic peice that fell off looks very much like the one in the pic.

Without that tongue on it the switch won't work.

Royce does the switch look like this because I have some if you need?

The long black bakelite/hard plastilc tongue on the trigger switch looks a bit longer and the hook catch is on the other side of the contact sides.

It grabs on that 3 prong arm M7 to activate the leaf switch.

Oh man! That picture you have is so good! So proud of members like you.

The new ones I have are a little longer. Deck is not to bad to work on but you have to remove chassis to get deck out. I have a couple other pics but it's mostly the part that usually breaks on Big Ben.

Thanks Bill!

Once I open it up I will have a better view of it. Basically it is the plastic tongue that fell off from the switch. I can see the adhesive area on it clearly.

Hopefully when I pull out the chassis I can access the trigger leaf switch part.

I was wondering what are the two "lugs" used to fasten the chassis, beside the seven screws to remove for taking out the chassis. I don't want to end up breaking parts.

Any pictures of it might help here.

Thanks to Superduper Norm for the initial discussions about the issue and identify the root cause, getting a manual and Badboybill for the switch!

Our GoodBoyBill and myself met at Elmhurst and Bill was so nice to hand over the leaf switch.

FIXED IT!
