I Have a RC-M70JW that I bought a few years back and I've had it stored in my closet. I went to use it and the tape deck will not work at all, cannot push ANY of the buttons down. It worked excellent when I put it in the closet, and I have took it out and used it a few times in the last couple months with no issues. I have no idea what could have happened. Radio works fine as does the Aux.input I play a iPod into it sometimes, but the Tape deck is a no go at all. Buttons are very stiff will not budge. Cannot push down at all. Any ideas what could be the issue?

That is very strange. There is a sliding metal bar inside that moves when you press any of the buttons. This might have got stuck. You can open up the unit, free it and lubricate it. That is what I am thinking. Other members here will have better suggestions.

yes never heard of it on a m70
I agree with BoomboxLover48
Sounds like a mech issue
I have had a lot of M70's and had issues but never heard this one
I think it could be an easy fix
But you are going to have to open here up
I think its the bar too

I think if you give the stop button or any random cassette button a few quick jabs it might loosen up the stuck issue.

I have an M70 with the record button always stuck. I opened up and investigated all I had to finally give up. It goes down once in a blue moon. There is no way to open up and fix that unless you have to remove all the mechanism inside by taking the two plated holding the whole thing.
Still don't know what is the issue with it. :bang:

Ok took it apart got it to unlock and it works again, I have no idea what I did but it fixed the problem for the most part. I still have a issue though, I cannot push stop without pushing on FF or Rew first then I can push stop and stop the tape but it plays, FF/Rew fine, but like I said I have to slightly push FF or Rew before I can push the Stop button otherwise it will not budge. It plays funny though it starts slow and then builds to speed but once and speed it plays fine. Seems to have a issue or a short in the stereo switch or circuit because to get the both speakers to play in the stereo function you have to smack it but in mono no issues. In other words she and old temperamental thing.

Update....
Well I guess I spoke to soon now it won't Play or FF/Rew anymore soon as i got it back together buttons push down but nothing happens took the back cover back off I can see motor pulley on bottom in back is spinning but belts not, moving Flywheels not moving, nothings moving . Arrgh !!

You need to replace all the belts with new ones. Belts lost its elasticity and it might have deteriorated. It is slipping on the pulley.

Take your time and do it carefully. Download the service manual that is available here. Take pictures when you work on the M70. This will really help when you want to put it all back together. Step by step pictures always help a lot.

You have to lubricate the button movement mechanical parts with white Lithium grease. That should solve the issues with deck buttons locking up. Grease only lightly and don't get it on any rubber parts or idler tires.

Main belt FBS 9.6 (Flat belt/small width) inner circumference 9.6 inches. Medium width slips off the pulley so buy the small width.
Counter belt SBM 7.0 (square cut .035 X0.035 medium) inner circumference 7 inches.

You can order these belts from studio electronics

Here is some excellent instructions from our member Superduper ( Expert Electronics Guru) which I copied from the following thread.. https://boomboxery.com/forum/index.php/topic/6685-changing-belts-on-jvc-rc-m70/

No. One belt is replaced from the backside. The other belt is replaced from the front side. Many folks think that rebelting a deck is easy, falling for those ebay descriptions..... "needs belts, no big deal, EZ job." For experienced boombox hobbyists, yes it is often not too difficult. For the novice, it can be anything but easy and screwing something else up in the process is not uncommon. Anytime you feel uncomfortable and over your head, I suggest you stop and take a break or farm this out for more experienced individual to rebelt for you.

On the M70, the best way to rebelt the deck is to:
1) Remove the back cover.
2) Remove the top panel.
3) Remove the chassis from the front cabinet 1/2.
4) Disconnect and remove the deck assembly (includes music search led board and appurtenant mini pcb's) from the chassis to rebelt on the work bench.
5) Replace the small belt from the front side which will be exposed once the chassis is removed from the cabinet.
6) From the backside, remove the flywheel backing plate (counting the number of turns on the adjustable backlash screw)
7) If lubing the capstan shaft......... then:
8) Loosen and/or remove the auto stop solenoid
9) Remove the flywheel, clean and lube the shaft near the base of the flywheel with light silicone grease.

Reinstall in reverse order.
Notice that NONE of this process involves tampering with the main circuit board.
Not ever step is enumerated above and I presume you will use common sense to remove and untether the proper connections to facilitate remove of components.

You don't usually have to replace counter belt as there is not much tension needed for it to work especially if counter was still working 👍

If you want to replace go with a 6.8 and buy the small one SBS 6.8. That is fine.
I have seen those belts also go out of shape over these years. I would replace them. Why to leave an old belt there when you already opened up the box!

It is a 5.06 mm short in circumference if you go from 7.0" to 6.8".

It should work well with a small square belt of 6.8 inches.

6.8 inch - 172.72 mm
7.0 inch -177.8 mm (correct size)
7.2 inch - 182.88 mm
