Recently I met up with Boomboxery member Dr. Dre (David) at one of the So Cal meets

We spent the day going through his extensive collection and he was showing me a recent acquisition. A Rexcel JCX-1000.

I believe this to be a fairly rare radio, I know I have seen them before, but not in big numbers. If any one else has one, please post in the "Collections" section and link it here.

The over all condition of the radio was filthy and hard to determine. It powered up, but none of the equalizer sliders did much, the balance slider did nothing and the volume was low and only had sound out of one channel. Only one VU meter working. Missing all but a few cassette keys. No functioning power switch. It was also missing the battery door.

BUT WHAT A BEAST!

Slightly bigger than a J1 or Helix HX-4700 this thing is HUGE with 8 inch woofers and genuine 3 way speakers system and tons of chrome.

Here she is, dirty as hell

Dave and I talked and came up with a game plan for this radio.
First, the decks are both there and probably re-belt-able, but without deck keys, he's S.O.L.
IF YOU HAVE A PARTS BOX WITH KEYS PLEASE CONTACT ME OR DAVID. Might need a few other things if you have more parts.

First, since I was working on Dave's radio AKA "Mr PBR", I had to do it right

The tear down begins....
20150830_163401.jpg20150830_163525.jpg

Like many radio's this thing had been heavily molested. :bang:
The power switch had been soldered and re-soldered many times and finally cut out of the loop with a wire nut on the wires. So to power up the radio, you simply plugged it in

20150830_172505.jpg20150830_173511.jpg

and she was dirty inside

20150830_163649_004.jpg

The main board containing the tuner and equalizer came out. I knew the sliders needed to be cleaned to try to suss out the problems of low volume and one channel not working.

20150830_164407.jpg20150830_164601.jpg20150830_165622.jpg

Might as well polish the chrome slider controls :-D

20150830_165851.jpg

Since one of the channels was not working, the previous HACK cut the speaker wires from one side and attached it to the other channel  :nonono:  NEVER DO THIS! Just fix it right :dunce:  :annoyed:

20150830_172250.jpg

Did I mention it was dirty????

20150830_172654.jpg

One thing that is nice, this radio has it's own separate amplifier (not on main board), so you could technically upgrade the amp if you wanted too (hint hint :w00t: :w00t: )

20150830_173145.jpg

Oh so dirty...

20150831_201752.jpg20150831_201759.jpg20150831_205704.jpg

OK, enough is enough, it's time to just tear it all the way down and do it right, full bath!

20150831_204955.jpg20150831_210207.jpg

The front is going to need some more work though...

20150831_210308.jpg

Time to get in there with a tooth brush...

20150831_210644.jpg20150831_211343.jpg

Can't forget about the chrome and grills :-D

20150831_204438.jpg

Speakers get a cleaning (gently)

20150831_221101.jpg20150831_221735.jpg

Time to start putting her back together...

20150831_220540.jpg20150831_222510.jpg20150904_120655.jpg20150831_225320.jpg20150831_224133.jpg20150904_120543.jpg

New power switch arrived and was installed.

20150903_170506.jpg

Time to make a battery door...

20150903_193354.jpg20150905_173116.jpg20150905_185057.jpg20150911_144112.jpg

Since the decks were missing so many keys and were virtually useless, David and I decided to mod the radio for Bluetooth and hope for keys down the line. So, I made a cover that I put inside the radio to block the openings and simply drew lines with a sharpie to simulate keys, from 2 feet away, you don't really notice. Better than holes!

20150905_134051.jpg

Once reassembled, it was time to test to see if it worked.

Right off the bat, I found that with the EQ cleaned, we had full spectrum adjustment and much higher volume, but still one channel working. I tested, pulled out the main board, retested and wasn't able to find the culprit. More testing, thinking about it, searching online and retesting. I traced the signal through the main board, into the amp, tested some more. I was thinking that the amp may have had a bad chip, even thought about pulling the amp and replacing it. I even went as far as to wire in a possible replacement and was testing it when, all of a sudden, it started working????

Certainly, not the way I want a repair to go, as I would prefer to know WHY and what component was causing the issue. That way it won't return. But I have run the system many times and it's still working in stereo. I managed to fix every issue it had accept one and that is, one of the VU meter's is still not working. I still need to open the radio up again to install the Bluetooth module that should show up today, but I am nervous to pull the main board, to get to the VU meter's. I don't want the "Mystery Issue" to return. Better to have stereo sound than stereo meters, but it NEEDS those meter for the "Cool as Hell" factor!

Still undecided on that.

In the end, I think it came out STUNNING!

20150907_084037.jpg20150907_084059.jpg

And how big?

It slightly edges out the J1 on height and just about the same length.

20150911_150301.jpg

It also has a cool feature in a guitar style strap mounts.

20150911_150510.jpg

It will go back to David on October 3rd at the Hollywood Boomboxery Meet. Look for pictures of this radio in action there!

In the end, I wouldn't mind having one of these. If you have one and want to part with it, hit me up!

Thanks for letting me work on your baby Dave!

Totally awesome Chris 😎 hopefully moving it around won't cause the channel issue again. Also I noticed the chrome speaker surrounds are a very weird but cool octagon shape. Hope Dave loves his new box!!!!

looks like you could put jumpers between the pins on the vu meter board and just have both sides run on the same signal , basically the vu's would both flash at the same rate.

Great save Chris - it sure is a big beast. I love how you fix stuff right too - it must be much more satisfying restoring 'proper function'!

James....
We have something in common Jimmy, that feeling of  when we see someones butchery and that feeling of  when it's repaired and working as it should. (Imagine how :superduper: must feel :w00t: )

Man, that is the fear! I really want to know WHY :-/ . I don't want Dave out there laying down the boogie, with B-Boy's on cardboard, hotties on his jock and then.......

I've seen that one before. Great resto bro.
Thank you Joe, I have to, once again thank you, Bad Boy Bill, Norm, Hemiguy, OldSkool69 and all the pioneer's of boombox restoration (sorry for the names not mentioned) that brought this game to this point. 10 years ago, no one was doing this and now this seems like the normal

This is a 30 year old box, set to blast on and on and on!

That is one of the boxes that I brought back from Pittsburgh that needed some TLC.. part of the BB40 trade

Man, I had thought of that and even tried it, but LED's won't light that way with out the proper resistor levels. Also, if it has a blown resister on the LED board, it will prevent the other side from working. I think the only thing to do is to pull it all apart and look for the bad resistor OR somehow try to get it to jumper across AND FARK IT UP IN THE PROCESS! :-O :-/  :nonono:

I think I will pull one plug at a time and wiggle the F out of it, see if it interrupts something. If not, move on.

What do you think Dave? To LED or Not to LED? THAT is the question!

Chris once again GREAT job brother, It was so cool seeing this resto in the play by play via the group text. I can't wait to see it at Hollywood :w00t: All I remember from the BBQ is a huge dusty behemoth waiting for some love and tenderness! So to be able to see and hear it in all its glory will be the shiznit! You are....The Boombox Wizard

i would also check for cold solder joints on the amp pcb , if you haven't done so yet.

I was just about to say that as when I got the Black C126 AKA Korean unit the LEDs were out on one side and it turned out to be a cold solder joint.

We motivate each other man.

Keep it up.

I agree 👍 without each other helping who knows where all these Boomboxes would be now and how many would have ended up in the dump sites. Thanks Chris for the mention bro 😎
