Hello folks, I'm nightwheel. I wish my first post here could be something less annoying, but sometimes things don't happen the way people wishes it could.

Anyways, to the problem at hand. I picked up a Panasonic RX-5085 from a yard sale for $10. Everything on it seems to work fine except for the FM band. I can get clear sounding audio if I tune into a station just right, but everything sounds really quiet. The AM band on the other hand comes in nice and loud when I find a clear enough station. The Line In also has no problems with volume, handled playing music off my phone with no problems.

Another thing I noticed when messing around tuning into FM stations was it would sometimes spike the audio volume up for a moment while tuning through the stations. It didn't matter whether there was a station there or not.

That is all I have noticed with it so far. If there is anything you guys want me to check about it, just ask.

Thanks for the help and have a great day or night.

Is this something that could be done without taking the unit apart, or is disassembly required?
Yes,

But I will be easy to open and clean switches. You are not taking any components out. In most cases the front of the Panasonic will come with speakers on it and you have to disconnect the speaker plug from the PC board by simply pulling it out.

Haven't even got around to getting some de-oxit yet and now the FM band is working fine. Maybe this box sat around long enough that it needed a few throws of the switch to knock loose some dust.

I will probably get some de-oxit to spray into the switches in the near future to make sure they are really cleaned out.

You shouldn't postpone cleaning all the switches. The sooner the better! Contacts gets oxidized and go bad so cleaning earlier is better to save these boxes.
