I've decided that I'm going to take my Panasonic RX-DT680 to an audio guy I know to do the line-in mod that's been posted on this forum. I thought while it was apart, I'd get him to take a look at the tape deck. Like most of them, it doesn't work. I found out it wasn't working the hard way (tried to play, then didn't) and the tape got jammed in there. Some brute force got the tape out - but also pulled the spindle out of place :-/

I pulled it apart today to check if I could see what exactly the problem is - and to be honest, I couldn't really work it out. It doesn't look like any of the mechanism is broken, but I just can't get it to sit in place properly again. There seems to be a spring that sits behind the spindle and I'm guessing that the spindle should lock in place somehow...?

While it was apart, I checked and confirmed that the belts have had it. The guy I'm taking it to says he keeps a fair range in stock - so who knows...?

I'd appreciate it if anyone has any ideas on what's needed to lock the spindle back in place? I've attached some pictures...

Thanks

I'm sure your friend will be able to sort the spindle for you. I'd be surprised if you bothered to play tapes anyway after you have a line in installed.

Good luck,

James.... :-)
Hi James
As much as I like my Ipod, I still have the occasional moment of guilty pleasure and dig out my cassettes!

The audio guy is much less a friend and more like a repairman - ie. payment! I guess I'm just weighing up the pro's and con's of trying to track down one that "works" vs one that I already have that needs some repairs - knowing that either way, they'll both end up getting pulled apart to do the line-in mod.

The line in mod for the RX-DT680 that I posted really is straight forward. The decks come out with 6 screws and two ribbon connectors. Just remove the bottom row of switches and you've disassembled enough to do the line in mod. You've only got three wires to solder to the underneath of the main board - give it a go yourself.

With regards to the deck, 90% of these decks have issues. Even after a rebelt, persistent issues often remain. Old logic decks can be a real PITA!

The line in mod works so well you'll love it!

If you were local here to me in Brisbane, Australia I'd do the mod for free!

PM me if you decide to have a go and I'll offer any assistance required.

James.... :-)
