The tale of the little GE 3-5252 B...

My wife and I sometimes go to garage / estate sales as she is always on the look out. A few days ago she saw an estate sale listing with a bunch of pictures and this radio was on a shelf among them all.

The company doing the estate sale required people to sign in at 6:30am. My wife got up early and was 4th on the list :w00t: (I was sleeping!)

I was up at 8am, had some coffee, doors opened at 9am.

I looked closely at the pictures online and determined the radio was on a shelf in the garage. When we got there I could see it from the sidewalk.

There were 50 people in the street and we were 4th through the door.

It was going to be about throwing elbo's and that old lady next to me was in the same frame of mind. We rushed the 3 people in front of us and I made a B-Line for the back wall of the garage.
I'm sure that old lady will be fine! :annoyed:

I secured the GE and immediately went into 1980's electronic's patrol mode, scooping up early walkmans, digital watches and cassette tapes.

I heard disappointment from the sidewalk dwellers as I proudly, lavishly exited through the front double doors of the residence, boombox hanging stylishly "At One End" / "The 45 degree Dangle".
("and yes, I was wearing my sunglasses while indoors BABY!" :chris920: )

Truth be told :annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed: ....
THOSE BUTCHERS WOULDN'T
KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS BEAUTY ANYWAYS!
I'M THE ONLY ONE ON THE PROPERTY QUALIFIED TO HANDLE THIS PIECE OF EQUIPMENT :annoyed:

(ummmm filthy beauty) :-/

The good:
All the there, battery door, antenna, knobs, switches, the tape deck even plays

The Bad:
Filthy, Garage radio for many years, switches gummed, no FM

The usual sink dunk and clean!

And After....
She came out better than I had hoped.
All switches and knobs cleaned and work to perfection, Tape deck works fine, FM works with clean switch. Sound is nice, warm and expected from this sized radio.

More than anything, I'm happy with it, it's no ground pounder, but a nice example of this model and surely worth saving and documenting.

That actually a pretty nice looking unit. I like the darker style of paint on that model. Just enough chrome to make it look a bit upmarket. The chrome on the control knobs is a nice touch.

I tell you what, you do work hard for your Boombox finds. That poor old lady didn't stand a chance!

James.... :-)

Nice save, Chris! :chris920:
And I wouldn't lose any sleep over that old lady - those early-bird bargain hunters are a hearty bunch.

It's somewhat similar to my 3-5251A "freebie" that was shipped to me by mistake (yes, I was told to keep it).
Even "Tone" boxes need a little love...

I also like the color of this radio, classy looking.

I'm not worried about that old lady, she was back up and putting her boot in another ladies eye over some costume jewelry :hoveround:

NICE, you got a VU meter though ;-) I would like to have that. But this has a battery LED!

That made night and day difference! Good Job Chris!
Amazing that 24 hours ago, this thing was sitting in a dirty garage where it has been for 20 years!

Yeah, I haven't found a radio in the wild in a while. But after having a look at Norms new wiki site, it got me thinking that this is part of the lineage in the GE story. Might as well have one to remember they ever existed.

Looks awesome dude, she cleaned right up! This was the first box I can remember having a chance to really check out besides my own. I grew up in the country and didn't have a lot of neighbors, but the nearest family with kids my age had this model. I distinctly remember how well it recorded, I don't know if it's the microphones or the circuitry or the record head or the tape or what, but it was crisp and clean.
