You guys probably saw this one on eBay a few weeks ago. I really don't like buying boxes from non-member sellers on eBay, but the description of the physical condition, combined with a "peanuts" price sold me. I have liked the look of the model for a while, so I rolled the dice. It was described as "non-functional," but it was so cheap I figured I'd have a parts unit at worst.

I was surprised to see the condition wasn't as good as described, and the seller did a great job concealing the acrylic damage in the photos using creative lighting and slightly out-of-focus pics. I avoid buying from eBay sellers because of the sleezey tactics a lot of sellers use. I didn't leave negative feedback because I'm really not interested in getting into a pissing match. So, I sucked it up and did the best resto I could with what I had to work with. I'm quite pleased with the result.

You can see someone tried to re-attach the aluminum trim with JB Weld. They did a pretty sloppy job and, as many know, JB Weld doesn't bite plastic very well.
You can also see some of the acrylic damage on the deck door in this pic.

In these next two pics you can see the extent of the damage to the acrylic. I'm sure it was the same guy who thought the JB Weld was a good idea. He obviously went rogue with a tube of super glue, which I believe was the initial attempt to re-attach the aluminum trim.

So I got to work. My first priority was to see how far I could take the acrylic. Unfortunately, the damage from the super glue goes beyond the surface. I wet-sanded and polished the deck and tuner windows. Considering the extent of the damage, they came up really well. I also had to repaint the deck door cover, since the offending agent took a lot of the paint with it that sits behind the window.
Once I cleaned the JB Weld off the back side of the trim and plastic, I used 3M black RTV sealant as the adhesive. I'll be using a lot more of that for the same application in the future.

Like I said, I'm happy with the result. It's a pretty neat little mono. Not the easiest to service, but not the toughest, either. It has a really clean sound and the deck works great. This will most likely be a regular "carry box."

What do you guys think? :-)

That's one in the eye for the seller, who probably didn't think that anyone would take the time and put in the effort to refurbish that box.
It looks great, shame the seller wasn't possessed of your box fixing skills but you saved it.

I liked this mono. Because
  • It is very rare to have "right side up" cassette deck in Monos.
  • LED VU
  • Mono with a Tweeter, that too with Chrome caps.
  • Mono with Bass & Treble and Loudness controls
Good find. There is a chance that it was built by Toshiba.

Nice job...It looks good.
I bought one on ebay a couple of years ago and the aluminum trim came loose and the GE logo at the bottom right was missing even though it was pictured with the logo on the ad. The seller sweared that it was attached to the box, but it was all BS. The seller gave partial refund so it cost me about $15. I still have it and haven't done anything to it, I'm just really bumed about the logo missing :'-(

Great job restoring it,you did a great job! I have one of these as well,I always liked the way it looked like it's big brother the 3-5286A
Skippy, Just curious: The little '80 is made in Hong Kong. Is the '86 made in Hong Kong or Japan?
The '80 has a somewhat "Hong Kong" level of build quality, but nothing compared to the later "Black Boxes."

Nice Aram! you're a magician!
Thanks Jerry. We need to get together - like, soon - even if it's just a "Mini-Meet."
I really need to free up some real estate in my kitchen.

As plentiful as GE's are, it might be worth it to snag a cheap beater, just to harvest a logo. I highly recommend the 3M RTV for attaching aluminum trims and logos. You just need to work quickly (and carefully), as it cures really fast when thinly applied, especially when it's warm.

That looks really cool and classy in silver with chrome details. Nice cleaning ! What size is that speaker ? Can it compare at all to any stereo-box you reckon ?

Peace

Hi all, newbie here... Been a collector since I was a kid (1968)..... I just wonder what standards there exist for us collectors at this website, Boomboxery. Specifically, I'd like to see details that so far I see missing in descriptions and close-up photos.

I'll take this opportunity to share as an example my notes on a GE 3-5280B in my collection.

Once someone's notes on a model are added here, like mine, I wish they would be copied to a Radio Museum" type of entry. Sort of a "hi-fi engine" and "radio museum" combo, but with more flexibility.

My topics: where made, Date Code 1203, factory code K-1, the a/c cord, the inputs/outputs, the manual, the chrome, the speaker and tweeter, the d/x reception in the SF Bay Area.

Made in Hong Kong built in 1980 meant quality equal to Japan.

What does the date code 1203 mean?

The cord still has the red tag and GE etched into both ends of the cable, just in case someone tries to sell one with a copy cat cable.

The inputs/outputs: Does the "Ear" act like an audio out? What cable fits? If not a mini-plug 3.5mm, what? The 2 prong mic fits with several I have, but it always confused me why it says "remote" for the left prong.

The antenna inputs are excellent for attaching even just a dipole two wire antenna for FM. No need for external AM antenna.

Anyone have a PDF manual? No find online as of 5-4-16.
The chrome is thick and accompanied with aluminum faces. The speakers grills are plastic, but also resemble chrome.

Tweeter is excellent.

Here in the SF Bay, I can bring in AM stations from Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, Texas. At least 100 stations.

FM reception is quite good. At least 40 stations.

Dear SFbay-radios you kinda just hijacked this guys cool post. You shoulda posted in intros. Not a huge deal, but kinda not too kool there guy. With regards to the ear plug:it is for a mono earphone bud.You put it in one ear to listen to the mono broadcast output feature. The date code stamp 1203. On G.E. radios the second digit stands for the year it was made, from what I understand.Hence your radio was made in 1982. Hope this helps.

OK, I will try to pay more attention to where I post.

Where did you learn 1203 = 1982?

So, the Ear output does support a 3.5mm mini-plug.

Anyone know what city the K1 refers to?

I have one of these GE's and really like it--for style, price, and sound---although new belts are going into mine next week---
I listen to west coast Jazz from the 50's and 60's and many of the recordings were originally mono and sound
excellent out of this unit....

I see this thread is a bit older but would like to Add to it.
The restorer did a wonderful job with what skills he has/d. I Did an E-bay purchase 12-22-17 being NEW to buying older used boxs but NOT new to these when they where new on the shelf!
I really did VERY well and scored from a 100% rated seller, one GE 3-5280C model, Single chassis box in 94% condition.
Now we have Paypal so we can be re-assured we get what that seller describes.
This little GE box really Rocks and was worth the 150.00 I paid for it!!
Will post picks soon. All's I need to do is give a light wipe down and add new lithion grease to knobs.
