Hi all, I have a vz2500 which I have got to mostly working order. Replaced all belts new styli etc. The first few records played well but after about 4 plays any record will stop playing anywhere between 1min to 20min in. I have checked the tone arm track etc and cannot see any obstruction or anything. Anybody have any ideas? Desperate here!

It is very strange to stop like that in 1 to 20 min time frame unless the motor has some issue or the main belt slipping.
Does it stop with a clicking sound before the stylus arm returns back?
Will it stop abruptly with the stylus on the record groove?

If that is the case the drum connected to the stylus arm through cables needs adjustment. This drum is connected to a micro switch. You might have accidentally knocked off the alignment. This drum with the steel chord is connected via gears to a motor with a small belt.

Is the main drive motor going bad for some reason...

Did you get the right size belt? Is it slipping?...Can you still hear the motor running?

hi thanks for the reply. the solonoid is clicking in rather than the arm stopping in the groove. so I guess that I need to look at the drive belt. I took the old belt in and asked for the same and maybe I was given the wrong one! do you know the size required?

If the belt was snug fit should be fine.

If there is a click associated with the stop then it could be the misaligned adjustment on the drum which is connected with the micro switch.

If that is the case why it is stopping at different time intervals? It is very confusing!

The drum with the cable/chord which gets in contact with a micro switch is the one controlling the stylus arm movement from start to stop, return and all. The pulse signal send to the motor makes is advance on the grooves slowly.

If you are watching the small motor that drives this function be careful not to get your fingers near the drum. It can run both ways.

Recently there was a posting on a VZ2500 issue. Check this...

Others members who have the VZ2500 should help us here.

Check out the tone arm motor drive, my VZ2000 sometimes does that, but I have noticed that sometimes the record sticks (as if its scratched) then the kicks off and stops with the arm returning to the park position. I have also noticed if i move the tone arm with the cue review buttons, it moves very slowly. My other VZ isn't doing this, it moves across the record surface quite quick. Could be the belt slipping, or the motor getting lazy.......

hope it helps

Fixed my problem, i switched record decks and now its perfect. i checked the old unit over and i can't find anything wrong with it, so its either worn out, or there is an electrical problem. I watched it playing outside the unit and when it 'sticks' half way across the record, i noticed the tone arm drive motor had stopped, a gentle nudge and it started tracking again until the end of the record.

All the tone arm wires were running smooth in their runners and all the contact switches looked ok.

Worn out!!!! but i managed to replace it with a very little used unit.

I just replaced my tone arm belt and noticed that fast-forward/rewind would work, but not track during playback. So, you hear about 30 seconds of music before the stylus gets so cock-eyed it pops back to where it started. The quick small turns the motor does during tracking can't seem to overcome the same resistance full-speed mode can, because I could nudge it during tracking like you did and get it to move.

SBM4.0 belts are the recommended replacement, which is what I had on there. They are 62x62 mils. However, the originally specified belt under PRB was SCQ4.0, which a bit thinner at 57x57 mils. As it turns out, 4" belts fit just right on a drill chuck, so I used double-stick tape to secure the belt in both axes for sanding until they easily fit through the gap on my caliper. I noticed that I still had issues at 57 mils, so I took it down to a little less than 50 and it began to work.

It's possible the issue is from some belt unevenness or a dirty worm gear. But if an SBM4.0 or SCQ4.0 belt gives you this problem and your worm gear is clean then it might help to try an SBT4.0 (51x51 mils) or SBS4.0 (47x47 mils).

The linear tracking motor belt has to have some slack in it or it won't turn . I don't know why but I ****ed with mine at least 10 times before I figured it out .maybe I should have checked the belt and cleaned the pulleys huh lol.
