As you all know I am a HUGE Lasonic fan and I have been lucky enough to have met Albert the 3rd generation owner of Lasonic and Grandson of the founder of the company and son of the man who built all the classic radio's we all know and love.

20131212_121534.jpg

For me, the Lasonic brand is very personal. The TRC-920 was the first radio I purchased on my own when I was 15 years old. But the story of Lasonic is very close to me since my Grandfather, Father and I owned and operated an electronic's company and I know first hand how hard that can be.

I have always been a David vs Goliath kind of a person and really respect the fact that this small family company had the guts to go toe to toe with the electronic's giants like Sony, Sanyo, Panasonic, JVC/Victor and others. The fact that we even speak of them 30 years later says volumes about what they were able to do and it is no coincidence.

The reason for my trip to Lasonic surrounded our member Miles' (aka =ml=) "Boombox Creators" project. Miles and his film crew are working hard to track down the founding fathers that created these machines we love and collect and I honestly had no idea of the scope of this project until I saw it first hand.

When I arrived at the Lasonic facility and saw a full film crew, lighting, sound recording and multiple camera's I was floored. Miles and his team are doing us all proud and I can only pass on that if we can help him in any way we should. He is still trying to track down the designers and engineers that made these radios.

I was lucky enough to see them filming the question and answer session with company owner Albert Chen. Every question that was listed on this site was asked and got an answer. I stood there with my jaw dropped as I heard the answers and I can say, we were way off on some of our guesses as to how and why.

I am going to keep my mouth shut until the documentary comes out as I do not want to spoil what Miles and his crew are working on.

After the filming I did a question and answer with Miles on camera with my Lasonic collection behind me which was very cool.

After that I had a chance to speak with Albert in length about the past and future of Lasonic and again, I have to keep my mouth shut. All I can say is the company has BIG plans that we are ALL going to LOVE!

One thing I will share with you all is a brand new product. A carrying case for the i931.

The i931 fits in there perfectly

It has suitcase style handles

The Lasonic Logo is on top

It also has a clip on shoulder strap

The coolest feature is the removable speaker covers
20131213_175704.jpg

You can pull the speaker covers off and keep on Blasting!

The beauty part is, it will fit other radios like this Trident.

These just became available on the Lasonic website this week HERE

Other information I found out is that the speakers in the i931 are EXACTLY the same as the ones in the classic 931. All the spec's are the same. Albert told me that even though they do not sell the speakers on their website, if Boomboxery members were to call Lasonic they would indeed sell them speakers directly! THIS IS HUGE information. As you know, the Lasonic 931 / 975 / 935 and 951 use these same spec speakers and it is their speaker design that creates that classic Lasonic Bass those radio's are so famous for. He told me his father was very aware that BASS was the goal and that Lasonic needed to lead the way in that department. We all know THEY DO!

Albert also told me that even though the parts are made in China, they will be moving towards full assembly IN HOUSE next year to tighten up quality control and improve the final product under their watchful eye.

I can see from visiting the new facility that Lasonic is a healthy company. They are building and shipping way more then they were when Miles and I first visited them a hand full of years ago. They had way more stock and way more radio's on the assembly floor. This in turn is good for us because they have some big business plans which Albert shared with me. But of course I promised to keep my mouth shut! The pictures below don't show the hundreds of finished i931's on the assembly floor. It was a DREAM to be surrounded by that many radios!

Albert gets it. He under stands that the Classic design and solid bass is what we are looking for. We both talked about other new radios on the market, their strengths and weaknesses and he really understands what Lasonic is and what it stands for. 2014 is going to be a GREAT year!

This story is far from over....stay tuned!

Chris,

Thank you for your efforts and dedication. You are one blessed guy to get to be where you are and speak with what had to be one of the original high council members of classic boom box manufacturers. Way to go and keep up the great work!

It seriously blows my mind that I had this opportunity. Lasonic is not a massive corporation with a board of directors making decisions based on extensive disconnected focus groups. These are people witnessing the scene and seeing what people want. That is a classic Blaster at affordable pricing. Not futuristic art projects with massive price tags.

Thank you man. The real thanks goes to Miles. When it all comes full circle you will see that he is on the path of the great Lyle Owerko and the priceless information he is gathering is so important to us all. My hat goes off to him and his crew!

I told Albert that his father is a REAL ROCK STAR! The man was a true visionary and Albert is trying very hard to carry that forward. From what I have seen, I think he's on the right path.

Oh. My. Goodness! Thanks for this post, Chris. I don't really consider myself a Lasonic fan, but damn, this is really exciting! That carrying case is a must have, for sure.

The beauty part of that carrying case is, all mid sized radios will fit in it. For years I have been using pillow cases or towels to wrap up my radios for travel (yes, my wife is thrilled!) But this is a great way to transport the grail with out damage. And the removable speaker covers means blasting while protecting is possible. Perfect for the beach too, because no direct sun and no sand or ocean spray!

Thanks for posting this Chris and bringing your Lasonic love to the project!

I'm way behind on sharing updates about the Boomboxラジカセ Creators project; sorry.

Since my wife became a collaborator and helped grow the project from a blog into a documentary, things have been moving quickly. As Chris said, Lasonic has some great news in 2014, but we have to keep our mouths shut for now.

Here are some pictures I took at the Lasonic shoot:

I really got goose bumps reading your post! As a true lasonic lover I envy your chances to have gone to Lasonic and see everything you have.

The carry case is probably something I will get to protect my grafitti i931.

So cool man, rock on!

2 big thumbsup for Chris and Miles  : smooch: this was such an awesome read and because of course everyone knows how I am about Lasonic old school and new school. My original TRC975 is what got me started in collecting these awesome machines and even getting back my original 931 was such a great feeling. I'm so excited about Lasonic and how they are the only company that listens to what consumers want.

There are many people that just don't understand Lasonic is trying to make these units cost effective for everyone. I mean $140 shipped on a brand new I931 BTQ is cheaper now than the original TRC 931 that went for back in the 80's, which was about $150-$160. I'm sure if Lasonic built a way better quality boombox that would sell 3 times as much and not many consumers could enjoy it because of cost  heck look for an example the TDK cost and build quality feels much better than Lasonic but you still have issues with them even though you paid lots more.

So I am now looking forward to what's new for Lasonic, and again thank you Chris and Miles thumbsup:

Awesomeness. I hadn't heard of the film and all in the works till now. If there's any crowdsourcing type site for it, or anyway I/we can help, please tell me as I may have missed it before.

My first boombox that got me into it as a hobby was the Lasonic 931 that my wife happened to find locally in North Mpls. She knew I wanted a vintage one, and ran into that model, not knowing what she caused by starting the snowball rolling as I think I'm up to around 70 now. (which honestly is a bit too much) Somehow she found a local vintage box for me when she tried, and in the 3+ years or so I'm been collecting, I've yet to find anything decent in town. Obviously she's better at my hobby than I am.

Can't wait to see what they have planned for next year. I'm not a big Lasonic head really either, but after hearing the story about the owners and simply that they are still making anything respectable for us nerds to want is reason enough to support em.

Now... if they can just get some NBA players and etc to use Lasonic boomers, they might catch on like Beats by Dre. Who would've thought kids would be dropping 200+ on big a** headphones in the digital music era when white earbuds were the hot thing a few years ago.
