Kaboom tweeters

So I finally got the rubber gunk off the end caps and volume knobs on this sucker and it turned out ok. The black plastic underneath looks nice a shiny. I tried a number of solvents but what finally worked was small amounts of carefully applied head cleaner.

So I'm thinking of adding a small pair of tweeters to this box by non-destructive means. They will share the space inside the speakers compartment, right behind the grill. I'll post pictures soon of my idea. My guess is that the small speakers inside are rated at 4 ohms and I'm wondering if the tweeters would need to be rated for 4 ohms also? Does anyone know of any reason why this would be a bad idea, will this blow the amp? Tweeters are really small and would not take much to power them although they would have to be hooked up with a crossover. Will the tweeters or crossover take power away from the main speakers?

I would suggest just replacing the front speakers. I'm guessing you want to get a little more highs out of the Kaboom. The problem with just adding tweets..........it will be the wrong impedance for your Amp. 4 ohms in parallel with 4 ohms is 2 ohms......which is really low.....the amp could burn out. It would be better to just get a different set of 4 ohm (if that is what they are rated) drivers......somthing that goes up to 20khz or so. But I still don't know if this will help improve getting some better highs out of the Kaboom. I actually prefer the drumpad kaboom......it actually has a Mid and treble control that makes up for the lack of highs and sounds good to me. The newer Kabooms have the acs which is suppose to automatically boost the higher end when needed..........if it would just stay on all the time I think it would be ok, but my ears can hear when it turns on.....it's like someone sliding the high end of an eq up and down........anyway maybe Super will chime in with some more info too........

I've been thinking of trying that myself. I don't think anyone has tried yet. Adding tweeters won't affect the ohm rating like adding a normal speaker. Look at any speaker set up, the tweeters are hooked up in parallel usually with a cross over or at least a resistor. The higher frequencies need less power.
Putting them in the grills would be trick! Sorta floating like a Sony CFS-500 or 66 or 99.

So I went ahead and did it, I went and added tweets to my Kaboom. Took about 3 hours altogether, but worth it. It's late here (1:30am) so I'm not able to turn it up very high to take it for a test run. But so far at low volume it sounds awesome.

I began with a pair of Cerwin Vega tweeters. These sell all the time on eBay for about $30


Took the housing off and this is what's left, pure tweeter.


Took the grills off, this part was hard. Had to push hard without bending the metal, then drilled a small hole to get the wired through.


Here's a pic of the wires going through the other side.


With tiny bolts and nuts I then secured the tweeter to the grill. Finding a small enough bolt took a while - finally found what I needed at a hobby shop. I decided on not centering the tweeter on the grill. This way the main speaker sound was not too obstructed.


Replaced the grill with the tweeter on it.


Here's a pic of the back with the speakers back on and you can also see the crossover. I secured everything down nice and tight so that nothing would rattle.


Complete!! I may be wrong but this could be the very first Kaboom with tweeters in the world.

I'll post a full review tomorrow when I get to really crank it. I can't wait.

Looks good , hit the screw heads with a black magic marker or similar so they blend in nicer with the grille

Just cranked it up to full power and it sounds darn good. Highs are now nice, distinct and clear. Sounds awesome.

Looks great and review sounds like just what I expected, JVC should have done this.

I pulled the tweeter from big Cerwin Vega speakers that had a built-in crosssover but that's not what I used for this box. I honestly couldn't tell you where I got them (the crossovers), I've had them for some years. I looked on ePay for something smaller and there were plenty available. But I went with what I had.
