I just picked up another JVC M70. But the right channel is dead.

TESTED:
RIght speaker- OK.
Line Out ( output on L & R channels )- OK
Line In ( no right channel )-NG
Head Phone Jack ( no right channel )-NG
VU meters ( no right channel )-NG
VU meters in Record Mode ( L & R working )-OK

Dioxed and cleaned all switches ( fuction, record switch, etc. ) and headphone Jack.

I do not have a service manual. Does anyone know the amplifier pin configuration ( inputs and outputs) That would be my next step.

I have a service manual and there are pdf files for the m70 service manual here on the site. I could help in the morning with a picture of schematics.

Can someone confirm with me that the Head phone jack is after the amplifier, on the amplification side ( Headphones have a very high impedence). I really don't want this to be a preamp problem, which it can't be because the LIne Outs work normal. But it could be after all the preamp processing. Line outs bypass all preamp processing. :bang:

.......I had the same problem once and I fixed it. I don't know how to search for my old M90 postings with the new system
I think I read it. If I'm not mistaken it was your head phone jack was stuck. That would be to easy of a fix. I don't have that kind of luck.

No not at all! I am 100% sure. It had to do with a handful of zener diode and transistor replacements.

I never had any easy fixes at all.

Volume, tone and balance are all part of the preamp system. Look at any stand-alone preamplifier and you will see what I mean.
Thanks Superduper, I understand that they are a part of the preamp system, but when you use the Line Out, it is just a signal being passed, the volume, tone, and balance controls have no effect on the signal being passed.

EXAMPLE:
When I attach a patchcord to the Line Out of the JVC M70 to the Line In of my Lasonic TRC-935 the volume, tone and balance controls on the JVC M70 have no effect on the signal ( and that is the way it should be ). It is the volume, tone, balance controls on the Lasonic that adjusts the signal it's receiving going in via Line In.

So thats why I asked the question earlier, could it be that the peramp is good and the amplifier is good and something wrong in the middle in the processing stage like a silder as Bill mentioned. I think I have to trouble shoot the amp now maybe jump from preamp input pin of the Right channel (not working ) with Right channel slider turn up and feed it to the Left channel preamp input pin ( left volume turned down ). If it works and I get sound then I know that the slider is good.

Superduper, look at my first post and you will see what worked and what didn't and tell me what might be your conclusion. Thanks for any input you will have.

It looks like the tone control board has issues. A signal tracer could have come handy here. This could be due to a break in the carbon resistance inside the VC slider. Superduper is our expert here.

:agree: probably right volume slider :hmmm: I believe the meters also are after sliders. But like Royce said Norm has the most experience here

There may be a way to run right channel thru left volume slider. I believe another member had done this

I was only noting that technically speaking, the preamp includes all of the signal shaping functions of the volume, bass, treble, etc. controls. Preamps do have built in amp stages which boosts the signal before being cut again by the bass/treble controls. Contrary to popular belief, the tone controls do not boosts either bass or treble when you slide them up. Because this is a passive system, those are selective signal cutting controls. When slid all the way to the top, they allow all of the signal to pass (all of the bass and treble). Instead, in their mid position, they attenuate the signal and that signal is what the output amps amplify to the speakers. In other words, in their mid position, each of the tone controls have attentuated the signal strength roughly 1/2 (not linearly). So actually, they boost nothing. Where they are in their relative position indicates how much of the signal is cut and when bass/treble are both in the mid position, the sound should hopefully sound balanced again. So since the function of the preamp is to cut the signal and not boost it, it therefore requires that a signal be amplified before being cut. The boosting stages inside the preamplifier itself are commonly called line-amps, buffer amps, or yes, pre-amps.

What does this mean for you? Well, the M70 has several preamplification stages and then finally, a line amp which boosts the signal to line level. Both the tone control module and the line-outputs get their signal after all the preamplification has already taken place. Since you are getting stereo at the line outs, then it appears no preamplification stages before the actual PREAMP (tone control board) are suspect. So it would seem that your issue is most likely either a failed volume slider, or catastrophic failure of the treble slider, or interconnect system, or a failed output amplifier system {and I say system(s) because there are appurtenant components such as resistors and capacitors in the signal path too}. If you really want to try and short the left/right side to see if the issue is with the amplifier module, pins 7/12 should do it for you. One is the normal signal input, the other is the phase inverted signal input. Since this is a BTL system, each module has 2 amps and one amp boosts the normal signal and the other amp boosts the inverted signal.

:dunce: :dunce:

I never would have guess that the Bass and Treble sliders were actually cutting the signal. I like it when I learn something.

Thanks :superduper: , You have explained it very well and confirms what I thought. I am a licensed electrician and also have some electronic training ( Rockford Fosgate ) so it's great to have some one that's more of an expert like you to explain it in detail. Royce emailed me a PDF of the service manual ( thank you Royce). I will trace and jump pins 7/12 and hopefully get this working. Thank you for all your help. :thankyou:
