I have about 1,000 cassettes and 12 Napa Valley (100ct) wooden racks. About 850 cassettes are 70's, 80's, 90's rock and 150 are 80's/90's pop, rap, and hip hop.

I really don't listen to cassettes, and they just sit here.

Are there any local guys (total package easily weighs 200#+) interested in buying/trading these? I don't have a specific price in mind or a certain trade in mind either. I would consider trading for the right boombox  . I'm in no rush to get rid of them, and it would be hard to not want to keep some of them

They are all sorted and alphabatized, and there should be NO DOUBLES.

Here is 8 of the racks and some tapes when I did the initial sorting of them:

I kind of had an idea to cut a wood frame/box to hold all the cassettes, add legs to the frame, and put a glass top over them to make a really cool table where you could see all the cassettes inside  .

OK...You have all these boomers, so you need to keep some cassettes. ;-) As you said, some would be hard to let go. Your not in a hurry. And the table idea is really cool for you to place in your listening room.

I suggest you rethink the process here. :hmmm:

Tempting to trade for them, but you are too far away.
Why do you not listen to cassettes? With the correct tape deck and speakers, non-worn out tapes can sound as good as cds!
Even better than cds in some cases.

anyway, your counter will be unique, once you sell them all off:

CASSETTE COUNTER: -1,000

I'm not an expert by any means, but I've never heard a 30 year old pre-recorded tape like those that still sounds good. Most of them used low-quality tape, and most people stored them in humid environments, left them near magnetic fields, or used them in cars.

The only way I could see any tape approaching CD quality is if you made the recording yourself, using high-quality tape.

So, oddly I got an offer for these on my ebay listing. Offer was $500+ shipping but I am hesitant to sell them because of the ebay and paypal fees I will get nailed with. They will easily charge $100-150 in fees and I will need to make about 5 packages to ship from wisconsin to california. I have the buy it now set for $900+ shipping only to cover all the fees associated with selling items for that much on ebay......

What do you guys think? I think the collection with racks is worth more than $350 in my pocket...... or am I going nuts thinking I will get more?

Is that what you paid for it? If not then that's actually an awesome deal and you come out with extra cash. Oddly enough cassettes really are not worth much, at least to me. Don't get me I love my cassettes but I would not spend that much on them. I would prefer a nice box for that price

Reli, I found quite a few sealed ones and to me they sounded better than my cd players.
I am in the desert, I still find used ones that sound good.
Lastly, i am using decent cassette decks. Onkyo 2090 and 2058, sanyo 9494.

I agree I could still buy a nice boombox for the money I would end up with. The problem is the Napa Valley racks are easily worth $30 profit each on their own which is already $360. If he wanted just the cassettes for his $500 offer, sure I would let them go but with the racks would double the amount I would want I think.....

This was my counter offer:

"My counter offer is $500 + shipping, but I get to keep up to 100 cassettes of my choice, 4 of the racks, and all of the blank/personally recorded cassettes. That way it will save you some shipping costs and you still get about 90% of the collection."

The counter offer actually sounds like you want to keep them.

Well, I know I don't want them all and if I was going to take that low of an offer, I want to be able to keep something.

He ended up telling me last night that he isn't interested anymore because he got an IRS bill in the mail that morning....

I asked him to just make a deal for some of it then. He emailed me an offer of $375 shipped for all the commercially recorded tapes only. I can keep all the blanks, self recorded, and all the Napa Valley racks.

I said I can work with that only if he sends me a money order for it. That way I can still sell the racks here or on ebay to get the final sale amount I was looking for. The racks sell for $40-$50 shipped each on ebay, I might just list the racks here for $20 + ship each.

Now I just need to wait for the money to come in the mail and get the tapes boxed up.

He never sent the payment and I knew I was selling for too cheap.

I split up the racks and the genre of music and made 3 separate auctions on epay.

I just sold 10 of the Napa Valley racks for $400 shipped . Still have all the tapes

FYI I might be interested in some tapes at some point... Not the whole bunch, but it would be nice to have a selection to play and display.

The tapes were sold on ebay, going to a business there that deals in re-sale. The racks also sold on ebay to a private collector.
