Hey guys, after abit of help with my Crown, it has been sitting around for god knows how long before i got it, everything works on it except for the tape. i made a short video showing what it does as im not the best at explaining.
Basically when you press play you can hear the motor working even though it sounds abit crappy, but nothing happens, the heads don't turn etc, you can see a motor being raised up into place but nothing else happens after that. i haven't opened it up yet to look inside just wanted to see if anyone knew what it could be, if i have a stuffed motor etc, or if it just needs new belts? you might have to turn the volume up abit to hear the motor in the video.
thanks for any help :-)

Mostly all decks need full restoration including cleaning and lube, new belts maybe tires, cleaning head and demagnetizing and sometimes adjustments. Looks like big issue is belts and expect the old ones to be all melted :-( very easy deck to work on to ;-)

Pulled the crown all apart tonight, pulled the deck assembly out and found a whole bunch of gooey stuff wrapped around one of the wheels, im guessing thats where the belts have gone and why it doesn't work anymore :-/

took afew pics of the deck, where all the goo is, is that the deck motor? im unsure of what parts are which. if so does that mean the motor could be stuffed? or could it be cleaned of all the goo? also since there are no belts on the underside which pulleys do the belts run on?
ive got a pic of the top side aswell.
Cheers!

All of that goo is indeed the belt vkboy. You'll have to clean all that off entirely for a new belt to run properly.
I expect the belt should go around where all the goo is at that end then run around the smaller section of the big silver wheel in your photo.
It may need other belts tho, dunno coz i've never rebelted one. Some radios have 1 belt and some have up to 4. Depends on the manufacturer.
Someone will chime in with more info i'm sure........ :-)

This unit is tricky to rebelt because there are 2 ways to run belts and of course one way don't work right. So test before you put back together ;-)

I can't remember sizes and I don't know where you would get belts but there are 2 belts. Easy way to measure is with small sting around pulleys then measure and deduct about 5%.

You can clean all old belts off with rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs. Here is a pic of another members 850 deck :-)

i haven't got a 3rd pulley like that 850 and the big silver wheel on mine only has a slot for 1 belt, it doesn't have that extra little wheel on the top :'-( , confused
i got all the gooey old belt cleaned off atleast, just need to suss out the belt situation. i guess i could always just try it with an elastic band or something and see if it works that way with the 1 belt, as i don't see how my system will run 2 belts.

You can actually manually test it with a rubber band by pressing play, ff and Rew while manually spinning in right direction and watch capstan and reels spin ;)

Tsorba that would be great if you could get a pic of your setup, i accidently broke off a couple solder joints for the power, a white and a red wire and didn't see which one goes to what so ill have to re-solder them before putting it back together so i might have to get you to take a pic of the power supply area as thats where the wires go to :dunce:
