You could always switch over to LEDS ;-)
We are talking about the Discolite here.
LEDs have the big disadvantage that they cannot vary in brightness but are either ON or OFF.
The woofer lights NEED BULBS in order to be able to really visualize the music.
Putting LEDs in there has no point at all and would just look stupid.

Here is your solution:

Ummmm, Max it can be done. The brightness/dimness comes from being lit at different voltages and LEDs are capable of doing this . ;-)

Bill, what LEDs do NOT have is that after-glow that only a true bulb can provide. I know that from my VW Beetle which still has 6V electronics and the directionals fade in and out. A friend of mine has LED directionals (aftermarket) on his Beetle and they just pop on and off.
While an LED is in fact capable of having different brightnesses, it will NEVER have the same smooth touch to it as a bulb.

Of course regular incandescent bulbs and Light Emitting Diodes will look different. But that's because a regular incandescent bulb puts out yellow glow where as LEDS have a clean bright glow. But trust me Jimmy's Discolite will look sharp, more vibrant and of true color with LEDS.

Hey guys,

Thanks for your help, and the friendly welcome backs. I checked out a bunch of auto electricians and it seems that 6V bulbs are too ancient to have in stock.

I did think about LEDs. Just out of interest what would you need to do to put LEDs in there instead?

I'd quite like to keep it original so I think baddboybill's ebay link is the way to go. Thanks for posting it bro. I'm there.

PS: Still have a bunch of BBXs. Conion C100f, Bolt Box and Discolite are on display in my bar, Sharp GF1000, Sharp GF777 and Rising 20/20 each get a work out pumping tunes in different parts of my house, Lasonic TRC-931 gets outings to the beach and tennis courts and Sharp 9696 usually just sits there looking pretty. The majority of my other stereos made their way over the Rick Shithouses place in Australia.

I would have to wait until I saw a Discolite upgraded with LEDs before passing judgment, but I do like the idea. I also agree with Max that filament bulbs have an intrinsic, vintage warmth about them that most, if not all, LEDs can't emulate.

Jimmy, get it done and post pictures and videos.   :-D

It's nice to hear from you again, Rambo.

I think led lights are best to save power so we must use them
