Hello and welcome Dan,
I've never touched one of these Hitachis before but I wondered I you've tried blowing all the dust from inside with compressed air and especially the volume and function controls, and spraying the inside of the controls with servisol-10 or something similar, and twiddling the function control to see if you can get any sound coming out of the non-operational speaker? Also clean the headphone jack and check how it sounds using headphones.
I have a hitachi 8610 which worked only on one channel because the volume knob had a broken pot spindle which I repaired and now it works great
Best of luck!!

As ledmeter says but you need to buy some compressed air and some contact/switch cleaner from Maplins here in the UK. Those are invaluable for first try before looking at it being anything else.
Spraying some contact/switch cleaner on colume sliders/pots, in the headphones sockets and thoers mentioned by ledmeter may resolve your issue.

:agree:

I soon found that switch cleaner is like magic fairy dust...sprinkle some about and you never know what might happen

I've got a Hitachi that did nothing but fizz and pop but once all the switches were cleaned it worked perfectly. Open the box up and spray it into where the contacts are in the switches and knobs and work them 20 or 30 times and then leave it 10 minutes to dry and bobs your uncle.

You can get servisol switch cleaner cheap from eBay.

Good luck :-D
