My neighbour whose having a sort out has dug up another old boombox! This time a Sanyo M9922L, filthy but seems to be in full working order except possibly one thing - the VU meter?

When turning the radio on, the needle shoots up to the top of the green battery charge indicator area but then doesn't move, as if it's in battery monitor mode. It won't move as a VU meter should, it's marked up as if it should so think it's more than just a power indicator. My Sharp GF-9090 has a switch for toggling between battery and VU modes but I can't seem to find this switch on the Sanyo?

Is the VU meter faulty or is it simply marked up to look like the business but in reality just a voltmeter? Or am I being blind?

I did try briefly with a tape but it still didn't move, didn't try for long though in case it chewed it! The meter doesn't move either when tuning, how reliable are VU meters, do they fail often?
