Hi everyone, I have repaced belts on this deck (which wasn't as easy as it could be) and have no power still ie: when on tape function none of the functions work on the deck. But pressing in the AMSS button lights the light for it.
Anyone ever repaired a similar issue on this box please ?

Yes I've replaced a bad resistor on my 920 for motor. I can check my pics to see which one it was :hmmm:

Good news is that there is power to the deck.
The not so good news is that the mechanism that rotates back to reset position isn't quite making it round which therefore stops functions working.
More work needed on it to see if I can see why it is not resetting properly.
Thanks for the heads up about your problem Bill.

Quite possible that some old grease has thickened up causing rotation to be slow and even stop. I've had this problem before ;-)

Yes that is my first suspicion too.
I have the deck open apart and ready to work on when I get chance, hopefully its a simple fix.

Ok, I worked on what the problem was and it was related to a gear that was not moving properly and a lever that engaged a microswitch. A small washer to give a little gap fixed that issue.
I still have it apart at the moment since now I have fixed the deck mechanically, when playing a tape there is normal sound then it goes very quiet.
Likely to be one of the ports/pots needs a clean or a component ? It only does it on the deck.
Any clues anyone ?

Hello everyone,

I am new to this board (and not a native speaker) and just got a Sanyo M-X 920K from a friend the other day.

Slight wear and tear and nothing missing. Line-In sounds great though the pots are crackling like hell.
Radio works as well but the program renders it useless to me. But as I expected the tape deck did nothing so I suspected the belts to be torn (in fact they just dissolved).

So, I opened it, removed the chassis, then the tape deck (Why would anyone use plug-connections all the way and then solder the motor wires to the board?) and then when I finally found a way to get to the flywheel I put in two rubber bands (please have mercy) in a way it made sense to me.

After reassembly it still didn't work although through the open backside i can see the flywheel turn for a second when i switch the whole machine off.

Then I discovered this:

I have no clue where this part fell off and how crucial it is.
I've read the board so far and know about the resistor that might have to be replaced and so on but this misterious part is the reason I registered to this board in the first place.

I fixed a busted-up Sharp GF-9090 by miracle years ago and serviced a Tascam 244 earlier this year (with service manual) so I'm not an expert in any respect.

All help greatly appreciated.

well okay, it's been progressing.
i treated the pots with "tuner 600" which is awesome, found the service manual for the m-x 920 (not k version) on this site and found out where that mysterious part belongs. and no it was not crucial apparently. i replaced the resistor near the motor wires and still the tape deck is not working. the flywheel even stopped turning like i described above after i replaced the resistor.

angelo, please see here the pics for the location of that piece on the deck.
Also, note the orientation of the belts. They must be right or the spindles rotate different directions to one another.

The problem with my deck was the main gear was not rotating properly, probably due to age and wear.

You can check the movement of that gear by hand and it needs to flick back to reset location which mine was not doing.
Once I removed the gear I could see why it was not flicking back to reset.
The little metal lever sits under the back of the gear/wheel and engages the microswitch to the right (see pic 2 for orientation of the lever) but was putting too much pressure on it and stopping it resetting.
So I placed a very thin washer where the lever screws in place to put a little more space between that and the rear of the gear.
Worked a treat.
Moving the gear by hand now made it reset properly without getting stuck.

When you look at the back of your deck it will make sense.

Great job, docs! The 920 is one of those boomboxes that definitely needs to be working. The sound =

thank you for that great reply, dave!
that brought me a big step further to the goal.
now it's at least working so far. although fluttering badly and of course it ate the tape and now it doesn't open anymore.
i think i'll have to clean it thoroughly since there is still some rubber goo all over the place. but i've had enough for today.
many thanks and i will keep you updated.
cheers!

well okay, i managed to start the tape deck by pressing the play button and simultaneously turn the flywheel till it ran on it's own. then i had a spark coming from the preamp pcb and the main fuse near the ac-input was blown. i replaced the main fuse and searched the preamp pcb for burnt parts but couldn't find any.
