Hi guys!

The tapedeck of my JVC RC-838 was stopping after e few seconds (I could hear the tape though)
So I started looking for a repair-solution on the internet and ordered a new flatbelt.

Today I changed it but I still have the same issues + now I can't hear the tape anymore... radio function works fine...

Any ideas?!? :-/

First note that I have not got experience with this exact model, but will make some general suggestions.

If the tape plays for a few seconds, and then stops, my guess is that the take up spindle is not turning with sufficient torque. The belt you replaced more than likely drives the capstan, which is enough to move the tape, but the take up spindle is not turning, which causes the deck's auto-stop mechanism to engage.

Open up the deck and look for rubber idler wheels, and other belts. Different mechanisms work differently, but the take up spindle is usually driven by either a rubber idler, another belt, or sometimes gears. My guess is it's either a dried out rubber idler, or a belt which you haven't seen or replaced yet. If the idlers and pinch rollers are not too far gone, you can try treating them with MG Chemicals Rubber Renue. Failing that, you may need new rubber parts. I've had success with MCM electronics in the past, but their selection seems to be getting worse all the time. Hopefully others can mention some better sources for parts. Whatever you do, do not try lubricating anything with oil or WD-40, as some surfaces require friction to operate properly, and it will result in rebuilding the entire deck if oil gets into the wrong places.

Additionally, clean the pinch roller and capstan very well.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Just saw that there is another belt in there, a smaller, round one... maybe that's the problem
I guess I will have to open the boom box again next weekend and clean everything :hmmm:

I would really appreciate it if someone could post some links for JVC RC-838 parts since the guy that sold me the other belt has no other parts for it...

Go to http://www.turntableneedles.com

I searched for your model of JVC on this page http://www.turntableneedles.com/8-TRACK ... _1771.html

It needs the following
http://www.turntableneedles.com/Square- ... _351.html# (the one you need)
http://www.turntableneedles.com/Flat-Be ... _p_50.html (Probably capstan belt)

But even if you change both belts, also check for idlers which have dried out, and clean the capstan and pinch roller well.

I've bought belts from them before, it'll be what you need most likely.

99% of the time the decks need a full cleaning, rebelting, demagnatizing. Sometimes on auto stop mechs also get dirty and stick as well as having stretched belts and dry tires. So it's not as simple as just changing a belt. If your not sure what your doing you may want to try and find a technician or member in your area to repair  good luck

Those are some expensive belts!!!
Studio Sound is much cheaper when you buy many. Although shipping is a killer in only a couple belts. That's why I always order a bunch ....

I know how you feel. Seems to be a scam running these days. When i got my CFS-77 off ebay about a month ago, the guy tried to charge me $45 to ship the thing from AR to IL. Had it been wrapped in some gold leaf & air lifted with a hoagie I could see it costing that much; when in reality - it was tossed in a box with a half dozen Sunday fliers & $2 worth of tape holding old boxes together. The shipping sticker itself said it was only $20.

Kinda leaves you wondering where the 'sale' on some of these 'sales' are, or better still, who should be 'committed' after you hit the commit button. Just my slightly off topic input. :dunce:

I see you and I live Fairly close on map to each other..I live in Reddick IL :-). I can explain some of those shipping charges.. 1st when I ship something off eBay I go with farthest location of California to set my amount. Then I add about $10 for handling. Handling is finding a suitable box, buying bubble wrap and tape, and taking time to pack then drive to post office. This all costs money of which buyer should pay.

Now when I said that the shipping is expensive with company's it's true

1st off they get a discounted shipping rate, they get discounts on boxes, bubble wrap, tape, etc..... They even get packages picked up...

So when they charge $8 shipping on a belt that cost $1.50 it's not worth it. That is why I always order 10-20 of them for same shipping cost.

Hope you understand ;-)
