Hi everyone, just got my first box - a very tidy GF8686 and would welcome some advice please.

It's in excellent condition but only couple of issues are a couple of slightly sticky ALPD buttons and the VU/tuning LED's on the left hand side are not lighting up when tuning or playing a tape. However, if I plug the iPod into the mic input and play that they do register the levels fineaAnd when FF or REW'ing a tape they flash for a sec when first pressing the button.

Can anyone guide me to what may be the likely issues please and how to fix them?

Lastly the tape mechanism etc seems to be working fine as do all the buttons (a little crackle on one of them) but should I pull it all apart for proper cleaning and is there a general topic or page anyone can direct me to for this sort of basic clean and check over - I have some basic electronic/soldering skills etc but more on the video game side rather than audio.

Thanks all. :)

Best guess on tuning light/ vu LEDs is possible variable pot either bad or out of wack. Without scheme not sure which pot it could be :hmmm:

Thanks Bill - the mic input level pot is crackly. Would this cause the LED's to *not' work on normal tape/radio mode though? As I say they work fine when the iPod is used a mic input.

I'm not sure with this model but they double up as fine tuning meters too and never light up with the radio (in record mode or otherwise), if I have mic mixing on and the iPod inputting through the mic pressing record stops the meters!

Only vid I could find of another 8686 in action is here showing the VU's clearly when playing a tape:

The pot I'm reffering to will be on the tuner board. It can only be turned with a tiny screwdriver. But this is just a guess :hmmm: a scheme would be more helpful

Ahh, OK. :-) I have been unable to find any tech manuals online for this particular model - presumably though the layout is very similar to other models in that line up? Not sure where to go next with this but if anyone can offer any help it would be really appreciated - without the flashing LED's the boombox looks a bit 'dead'...

Hey guys - just bumping this up in the real hope someone on the forum might be able to help in any way ? (Superduper - sent you a PM but no reply :-) ).

Really be a shame not to be get these LED's going as the rest of the box is mint and I don't really want to move it on - at present I have the box in bits to replace a switch:

OK, need to get this back together this week as the belts just arrived so this is a last desperate plea for help?! :-/

There must be someone techy on this forum who fixes these things and has some idea where to start finding the issue?? :'-(

I may be able to get a parts 8686 - so could possibly swap the boards and try but would like to narrow it down a bit?

My 8686 LEDs register under all functions. I'm not sure what's up with yours. Really just sounds like the signal is lost before it gets to the LED meters.... maybe a broken wire? :hmmm:

I dunno :dunce:
