I finally picked up my grandfather's Aiwa CA-70. Cosmetically it is in almost mint condition. I'll try to get some pics posted tomorrow.

It needs the woofers re-foamed and obviously needs belts. Reason he quit using it years ago was that he couldn't insert a tape. It appears as though the head/pinch roller mechanism is stuck into the engaged position.

I have not replaced belts on a box before. Does one of the belts control the engagement of the tape play head and the other control the motor for advancing the tape? Or do I have bigger problems. Thanks for any help and input! Can't wait to get this baby up and playing again!! :-D

on full logic or soft touch decks usually the belts control the heads going up and down so if that's not happening it's most likely the belts slipping or broken .

the speakers are easy to re foam ,on the aiwa they are most likely 5'' speakers and you can buy the foams on ebay or i can do them for you if needed.

if you work on the deck you may have to first turn the fly wheel pully's in order to get the tape head to retract back to the down position then you can proceed putting new belts on .

Here are a few pics as promised:

Thanks for the info Floyd. I thought that is what I read somewhere. Just figured I better ask the experts.

I PM'd you a couple weeks ago about the re-foam and plan to take you up on your offer. This box is too sentimental to go taking my first shot at a re-foam. LOL! I'll get some belts ordered today plus take a trip to the hardware store for a super long #2 phillips screwdriver. One of the screws is way in there.(tried to keep that one clean - LOL!)
