:huh: it could be alot of thing wrong with it,, my first move would be to clean all pots a switches even the record bar inside the box ,,if that does not work then u need to delve deeper ,,if u are not the electronic savy man then u might have a tech look at it,,,most of the the cleaning parts corrects most problems :-) :-)

if that don't help, try swapping left to right mics to isolate between bad mic vs bad circuit.

De-oxit seems to be the best as it leaves a little gum behind to keep the original draggy feeling of the switches/knobs....but in a pinch you can use regular contact cleaner which is WAY cheaper it just tends to dry up the pots real easy and can actually ruin them if they get too dried up by too much spray.

Hard to explain you'll get good at this if you start collecting.

BTW- I'm in the PNW and a MAJOR cassette freak too!! :thumbsup:

you could also try adjusting the tape head azmuth or tracking alignment which is simply turning the phillps screws below the tape head until the sound improves.
