My friend and I got into a discussion last night on this topic and I was wondering what our opinion was.
When you think of the shape of classic boombox, perhaps only the famous design that you see on T-shirts comes into mind.
or maybe you love the design of removable speakers and this is the shape that reminds you of your youth, etcetera.

I like the older square style like the JVC PC-55, Rotel RPM-100, and even the Panasonic RX-DT680 and similar boxes however, I don't really care for the rounded 3 piece boxes like most of the boxes from the early 90's to today. The square style still has some ties to the original "Box" shape with the square corners where the round ones just don't.

I'm sure I could find some exceptions just like there are some egg-ceptions that I really like, I think it's to rigid to completely say I hate or love only one style or another. Being a big fan of portable audio I'm glad some people like what I don't since it helps keep all old boomers alive and spark interest in them for the current and future generations.

As a bald, middle-aged white man, I don't get any social benefits from taking boomboxes outdoors, so they mostly stay inside. And therefore, I like 3-pieces just as much as 1-pieces.

As long as they look good and sound good, there's no difference to me.

I used to be the guy who hated 3-piece boomboxes until I heard some of Freddie's Sansui units and the Sony FH series. Now, I have several 3-piecers in my collection.

And now I'm the dog that hates them. :annoyed:

1. They are HEAVY
2. They hurt more when you trip over them
3. The handle either sticks up, or comes off, doesn't fold down. And I think on some boxes, when the handle is removed, the speakers are loose. :dunce:

I love my Fishers, PH480 and PH492. They look and sound great. I truly love my German made Telefunken Studio 1. I also own the huge Conion Silon with disco lite and that box is so large you cant help but love the looks  Someday I also wouldn't mind adding a 4 pc or 5 pc box to my collection. I have a few other 3 pc boomers, but only one of them is a keeper, my Lennox Sound from which I had owned one in the 80's :w00t:

I like some threepiecers. It's kind of ironic that I pretty much only collect low end graphic laden ones or the ones made by notable hifi companies. I'd like to eventually have a representative from all the big hi-fi producers, as quite a few of them only made threepiecers.

The big Fisher's are probably my most loved threepiecers. But I do think the 480 and 492's were the 'first' to make big units with detatachable speakers before it became the dominant style later on in the 80s. Those two are massive too!

The Sony FH's and the equivalents made by other manufacturers light my fire too. The amount of features and quality packed into them is mind boggling.

My collection is predominantly big onepiecers, but I'll always have room for quality threepiece boxes,

Rock On.

I'll forever have a special place in my heart for my Fisher 492s ( 490s,480s included). They are quality built and have serious sound. Street cred. all the way in my book. The only other (legit) 3 piecer I've heard is my JVC PC 55. Again. It is top shelf in quality with matching sound. All in all, I like both kinds - as long as they can "Bring It" :stereo:

It is very interesting to hear the diferent opinions here.
I've been getting into three piece boxes latly, but not because they come apart,
(actually when I find one I go through length to make sure the speakers are secure even if they never come off again)
and not because they sound great, although most of mine do,
but because they are long.
What I really need is one of those long one piece boxes like that 4 speaker Sanyo or the 4 speaker Pioneer.
Sure they are a little more cumbersome to carry, but they look great when you suit case hold them and walk down the street.
It makes your profile look likt a T
It is the shape of the 3 piecer that I find appealing as of late.

Funny thing about 3-pieces, I always leave them attached. I think they look much better that way.

i collected boxes since early 80s,and before i joined any boombox forum i'de never even thought about it at all,a box to me wether it be a one piece or 3 piece, they are all the same to me,i agree, maybe one piece are easier to carry but 3 piecers definately sound nicer, most 3 piecers are alot clearer, have alot more bass ect..going back to easier to carry, who takes boxes out these days anyway ? so to me it does'nt really matter..infact my first propper box was a 3 piecer and it went every where with me in the early 80s,we used to walk for miles almost every day for 2 years and it never showed a problem to me..
